windows defender now going after all torrent clients

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

https://torrentfreak.com/utorrent-conti ... ne-210318/

i noticed my tixati torrent client got flagged by windows defender, go googled and found this.
https://forum.tixati.com/support/7003

Seems there is another work around for this, which is to run your torrent client on your qnap and download torrents that way..... OR you can just disable windows defender PUA. or replace windows defender with another anti virus.

maybe i was mistaken. i check win10 virus logs, and it says it was able to ignore the pua for tixati. hopefully it sticks. will keep monitoring :'

Windows Defender keeps silently removing the software despite being explicitly allowed on the machine,” athelas64 writes. “After allowing the quarantined software, qBittorrent works…. until the next restart.”

I had the same issue, where I was able to use utorrent as recently as yesterday. deleted and qbtorrent also blocked from installing.
However I did make a change in Windows Security (running Windows 10 Pro) to turn off the Check apps and files and the Potentially unwanted app blocking. This allowed be to install qbtorrent and run it. Don't know that I am going to stick with that long term, but at least it is a workaround for now.
Cheers.

They don't give extra info about why we are PUA. eg that we contain malware or we do other nefarious jobs while appearing good (like a trojan). Utorrent seems to have similar problems. Utorrent also has signed installers/binaries. So the problem doesn't lie there.
Probably Microsoft somehow decided that bittorrent programs (as a category) are malware. I can't give any other explanation at this point.
I also can't seem to find a contact point for disputing this...
qBittorrent/uTorrent are 2 very popular software. MS is only going to shoot themselves in the foot because users may choose to stop using Windows Defender instead of not using qBittorrent/uTorrent.

i don't recommend utorrent, but qbitorrent got blocked from being installed? :S

if this type of behaviour persist, it may just force me to move to linux for desktop. this is fukked up.
