TS-421 stuck on Starting Services

Post by Graham »

Hi,
i have had the 4th hdd unplugged for quite a few firmware updates (4 or more), it was formatted and had no data on it.
I decided to plug it in and when i restarted the TS-421, it got stuck on Starting Services.
When i ran up Qfinder the TS-421 had an IP address that i had used on the previous modem that i had some time ago (192.168.1.150).
My current modem ip for the TS-421 is 192.168.0.150. I plugged the TS-421 into a different modem that had that ip range and could not login to it.
To prove the Qnap was functioning ok i toke that 4th hdd and set it up on the TS-421 from scratch, it worked fine, and when i plugged in hdd 3 the problem returned Starting services and had ip 192.168.1.150.
I'm guessing that there is a config file on each HDD that i can modify or delete to get the TS-421 to work.
If needed i can boot the pc to a bootable Linux disc, to access the hdd's, via SATA or USB adapter.

Thanks Graham

Hey Graham. :D

Not sure what you were expecting. Your post is a series of statements. If no-one comments, it's because no-one has anything to add. Personally, I assumed you were logging your repair efforts for the benefit of the community, and that there was more to come.

If you're seeking assistance from the volunteer community, please ask a polite question (or two) instead.

maybe i'm in the wrong area for help and any advice.
my 2nd comments were not intended to upset, merely a comment.
i would imagine that there is a quick fix for my problem, a config file that needs tweaking.
i was hoping for that type of advice.

Bad idea. There was data on it. System and configuration. The NAS design is done for RAID, not as a single disk server.

Being firmware/system partitions, being configuration partitions. And all these are on a RAID1 spanning all internal devices. Why ever, the RAID1 system decided the newly re-added disk and it's data is newer - and the config and system partitions contain old resp. inconsistent firmware sections.

As said - it's a RAID1 spanning all disks.

Assuming you have not removed the config backup script from crontab, you find a tar archive on the first storage volume - taken every Wednesday around 03:00 local. Here the backup folder on a system using a RAID as the first volume:

[~] # ls -ls /share/MD0_DATA/.@backup_config/
8 -rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 7043 Jun 13 03:04 0_20120613_0304.tar.gz
8 -rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 7043 Jun 6 03:04 1_20120606_0304.tar.gz
8 -rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 7043 May 30 03:04 2_20120530_0304.tar.gz
...

...similar on a single disk first volume (for disk jockeys it might be HDB HDC HDD - depends on the slot number on these systems)...

[~] # ls -ls /share/HDA_DATA/.@backup_config/
8 -rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 7043 Jun 13 03:04 0_20120613_0304.tar.gz
8 -rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 7043 Jun 6 03:04 1_20120606_0304.tar.gz
8 -rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 7043 May 30 03:04 2_20120530_0304.tar.gz
...

For safety, I suggest to restore to an alternate place, and compare:

[~] # cd /
[/] # cd /share/Public
[/share/Public] # mkdir restore
[/share/Public] # cd restore/
[/share/Public/restore] # tar -xvzf /share/MD0_DATA/.@backup_config/0_20120615_0631.tar.gz
etc/config/apache/apache.conf
etc/config/iscsi_trgt.conf
etc/config/smb.conf
etc/config/smb.conf.cksum
etc/config/uLinux.conf

From there you should be able to restore the config file you are behind. Not sure you will be able to get to the SSH - you might have to go over this process -> https://helpdesk.qnap.com/index.php?/Kn ... d-firmware

-Kurt.
