Needs some light shed on transfer speeds.

Post by andee10 »

Hi all,

I have a QNAP TS-453A with 4x 8TB Seagate drives.

Firstly, when I move files around within the NAS itself for organisating I find the speed a bit slow at 10MB/s.

Second, I have 2 PC's both using a 960 Evo and the transfer speeds from the NAS a vastly different. 1 PC gets over 100MB/s but the other a measly 10MB/s. The faster PC is on a newer chipset (z270) while the other is a z97 though but still should be fast.

PC's and NAS are connected to a switch connected to a powerline adapter to the moden/router.

best to ask helpdesk
https://helpdesk.qnap.com/

hm... did you try changing the ethernet cables? to troubleshoot if that is the issue?

this is your network?

QNAP TS453a >> router >> powerline adapter1 >>>>> powerline adapter2>>> switch >>>>> PC1 & PC2

i also did some checking online, could it simply be a driver issue on your problematic pc?

try using Iobit driver booster, it will scan for updated drivers. alternatively there is DUMO
http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?dumo

you can then update your drivers using that, reboot and see if anything changes?

how exactly are you doing the transfers? file station? windows explorer samba? or what :'

I have not, will give it a try.

Network is

Router >> powerline adapter1 >> powerline adapter2 >> switch >> PC1, PC2, TS453A

Giving lobit driver boost right now, seems like I've got quite a few out of date drivers.

I'm just using windows file explorer to move files around.

also if your pc has more than 2 ethernet ports, try changing the cable to use the other, see if anything changes?

If you're moving stuff internally within the NAS (not from pc to the NAS), then like onecd said, using filestation you can do it internally for best speed.

but that said, i also move stuff via file explorer on windows, but i didn't see any low speeds like what you mentioned

... and copying via Windows Explorer between NAS shares will be slow. Better to do this within the NAS. ;)

Updating drivers seems to have fixed the speeds :)

I'll give that a try too. It was just more convenient using windows to move things around imo.

Edit: Just gave it a try with the qnap software and holy sh!t, I moved a 16gb file to another folder and it was done in under 10sec.

so both explorer and filestation work now? glad it worked :} gratz

if it's just a couple of stuff i simply use file explorer. but if you are moving a lot... i'd seriously consider using filestation for that :' (for internal file/folder transfers in QNAP)

Yep, all working perfectly now. Definitely going to be using filestation for big or a lot of file moving, just couldn't believe how fast it was lol

Thanks a lot for letting me know about updating the drivers!
