New TS-832X Out of Memory

Postby IrY100Fan » Wed Nov 07, 2018 10:56 am

Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a TS-832X (2GB) and am currently setting it up. The only thing I have done with the unit so far is update the firmware to v4.3.5.0728 and create a RAID5 storage pool with 3 "thick" volumes. I have not installed or setup any apps yet. Whatever apps are installed are there by default.

I keep getting out of memory errors multiple times a day even if I'm not using/transferring anything to the NAS. It seems as though the biggest offender is "python". I also get a message complaining about swap usage being too high. ("378.13MB / 23.41GB")

Is this normal because it only has 2GB installed? (If so, QNAP shouldn't sell it in that configuration.)
Will adding more RAM cure this or just push the problem down the road?

Thanks.
-Brian

Hi Brian. :)

Hmm... have you run the Malware Remover tool yet?

Debian 'Stretch' on my production NAS (TS-569 Pro), with the backup NAS (TS-559 Pro+) to eventually follow. When that happens, I'll no longer use or support any QNAP firmware. Debian powerup/poweroff times are < 1 minute.

Hi OneCD,

Thanks for the reply...
I am not sure what malware remover tool to run. There is an "AntiVirus" option under Applications, but it only allows me to scan user/shared volumes. I don't see any option to scan the NAS's operating system.

I can't seem to install the Malware Remover tool. When I click install, the install button disappears for a second and then returns. In fact, it is doing that for all of the apps. Maybe I'll do a factory reset and see what happens.

It looks like the reason I couldn't install any apps is that I had no volumes setup. I guess it stores the apps on the hard drives.

After installing Malware Remover, I ran it and it didn't find anything. (Although it looks like it only scanned my installed hard drives and not the system flash memory.)

I decided to install 16GB of RAM and that seems to have cured the problem. I have not seen any "out of memory" errors since. Seems to me QNAP should maybe stop selling the 2GB model as it doesn't have enough RAM right out of the box.

Thanks for the assistance.
