Creating windows bootable USB?

Post by wazzzzzzzz » Mon Apr 06, 2020 10:51 pm

Bit of a strange ask, but I need to create a Windows 10 recovery USB stick using my TS-451, if possible! That means
* Make a bootable USB stick (fat32 I guess)
* Download an ISO from microsoft (5gb)
* Copy files from inside the ISO to the USB stick

The reason is I've got windows 10 desktop which is now failing to boot due to a win10 error. I have 2 work laptops at home but they're too locked down to be of use and thus I'm trying to solve this with my NAS! Unfortunately my knowledge of the NAS is fairly rudimentary; I basically use it as file storage.

Any help appreciated!

Regards,
Warren

you want to run Windows 10 on your NAS or on a VM on the NAS ?

Win10 media creation tool makes a USB stick for you (like magic)

I want to use the win10 recovery USB to recover my desktop... so don't need to run windows on the NAS, unless by doing so it allows me to use the win10 media creation tool?

As of now, I don't have a PC to run the windows media creation tool on!

you can use VS to create a test Windows10 VM, to create that bootable stick

Thanks! You might have to walk me through what to do however...

I found 2 possible containers and received 2 errors
* surazzarus/windows7-starter - which gave downloaded, then gave the error "400 Client Error: Bad Request ("No command specified")"
* microsoft/windowsservercore - which gave the error, "Background task error for create windowsservercore-1: image operating system "windows" cannot be used on this platform" when I tried to download & install it

Am I trying the right containers and if so, what is going wrong?
