ssh Newbie falling at first hurdle

Post by wyattd »

Im trying to access my QNAP NAS (TVS-473e - Firmware 5.0.0.1891) via ssh using Terminal on an iMac.

I want to learn about using ssh but am falling at the first hurdle with the ssh command. I added the verbose tag seeking clues and got the following result.

(Note. actual admin user id replaced with xxxxxx in this report)

ssh -vvv xxxxxx@192.168.1.136
OpenSSH_8.6p1, LibreSSL 2.8.3
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: /etc/ssh/ssh_config line 21: include /etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/* matched no files
debug1: /etc/ssh/ssh_config line 54: Applying options for *
debug2: resolve_canonicalize: hostname 192.168.1.136 is address
debug3: expanded UserKnownHostsFile '~/.ssh/known_hosts' -> '/Users/xxxxxx/.ssh/known_hosts'
debug3: expanded UserKnownHostsFile '~/.ssh/known_hosts2' -> '/Users/xxxxxx/.ssh/known_hosts2'
debug1: Authenticator provider $SSH_SK_PROVIDER did not resolve; disabling
debug3: ssh_connect_direct: entering
debug1: Connecting to 192.168.1.136 [192.168.1.136] port 22.
debug3: set_sock_tos: set socket 3 IP_TOS 0x48
debug1: connect to address 192.168.1.136 port 22: Operation timed out
ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.136 port 22: Operation timed out

So not even a password prompt to start to get access.

Is there a file I'd need to clear or initialise on the NAS without resetting the NAS itself which will allow me to logon.

The NAS settings are correct to allow SSH. Would deleting the administrator id which I'm having trouble logging in with via ssh clear any keys the NAS may store about that user on the NAS allowing me to recreate the user with a blank slate relating past use.
The known-host file on iMac has been reset to default as it contained out of date ip entries only.

Help needed.

Thanks
David
