Can I replace 2 hard disks of my TS-251D with higher capacity when the volume is static

Post by asadulhuq »

I want to replace two hard disks of my TS-251D with higher capacity new HDDs without losing any data. Is this possible when my old disks are formatted with a single static volume? I am using RAID 1. If possible, then how to do this? Thanks.

"Without losing any data" - that's what backups are for.
While you can do this and, if everything works fine, you won't lose any data, there's no guarantee that everything will work fine; so please make sure your backups are all OK.

I guess there could be some potential bytes per inode issue (not being able to use all the space) if you'd be using >16TB drives.

Yes.

1. Remove the first HDD while the NAS is running, insert the new HDD.
2. Wait for the RAID mirror to rebuild.
3. Remove the second HDD and insert the second larger HDD.
4. Wait again for the RAID mirror to rebuild.
5. Use the expand volume feature.

Make sure the NAS is on a UPS during this process. If there is a power loss either during the RAID rebuild or during the volume expansion, there is a significant risks that the RAID will be pooched and you'll probably shed a few tears as a result.

Make sure the disk size is supported by the NAS model you have and make sure the volume size does not exceed whatever the volume size limit is based on the inode selection made when the volume was initially created.
RAID is not a Back-up!
