hey Folks,
I have an old QNAP TS-431P running latest QTS which has been sitting in a box for a while.
Wondering - if I:
Take old drives out
Reset
Install new drives
use as required
Can I (at some time in the future if needed) -
switch off
put old drives back in
restart ?
will that be back to its older original config and be useable ?
And then, when I'm done
switch off
put the newest drives back in
restart again and back to square 1 with the newer drives/config
If it has any bearing - the old drives are 4 x 4TB in 2 lots of RAID 1
The new drives will be 3 x 8TB RAID 5
Much thanks
J

In theory ..yes..but migrating the disks always bears a risk, always have backups and internal set of disks is no backups
also how can you run the "latest" OS if the NAS was in a box ? (always state the version)

Doing so you will get an error "OS mismatch" when using the old disks.
You need to install firmware (either installing firmware which is on disks -> NAS downgrade or install firmware which is at NAS again -> firmware at disks will be upgraded).
Anyhow, after a firmware update the disk set not in NAS has an outdatet firmware and you need to do as above when using this disks!

Re: Is it possible to view previously used drives?
@dolbyman @FSC830 much thanks for your swift and helpful replies. The old set is backed up so am happy to go ahead and reset with new drives with a view to updating the old set if I ever need.
Cheers all
