TVS-h1288X-W1250-16G Adobe CC VM

Post by ShareWisdom »

Greetings,

I'm purchasing a new h1288x and will be upgrading the memory to 32 GB for now with the option to add 32 GB later (16 GB DIMMs).

I have two TriCasters (TC1 and TC2) with 10G copper NIC's and have ordered a QNAP 12 port switch that will be standalone.

I would like to use the 1288 as a replacement Adobe CC editing system running in its Windows VM.

Will this work with reasonable performance or should I skip the VM editor idea and get a lower cost QNAP with 8 drive bays?

Thanks,
Rob

I was planning on getting a certified Nvidia GPU card as well. Anyone using a newer GTX 1650 Super?

Editing video in a VM would be ..meh..I have done some davinci resolve via rdp (and vpn) and video audio was impossible to sync right. (dont think it will fair much better via a local connection)

If you only edit video then only thing you had to fight with would be the image degradation via rdp...

I have a 1288x and windows VM performance is decent ...but editing directly on it ..not sure if that works (with a 13k passmark it would be an ok render node) as storage, it is fantastic

Thanks dolbyman!!

We're not doing any color grading and use Splashtop to remote to the colo facility so it sounds like the performance might be acceptable.
Not sure why audio/video sync would be an issue.
Worst case I get another editing computer.

I'll probably get a GTX 1050 from the certified GPU list to give it a try and will let you know, unless someone else has used a newer GPU which would help with the render.

Currently using an i7 5820 and GTX 970 - seems it should be at least that fast even running in a VM if I can use at least 4-5 cores. Anyone know the minimum number of cores if I'm not transferring data from the other two systems while we're editing?

this is kind of silly. Get a $1200 Mac Mini and run Adobe CC on there, and use Splashtop or Jump Desktop to remote into the Mac Mini. Plug the 10G port of the Mac Mini (standard when you pay for that feature - only $100 more) - into the 10G port of the TVS-h1288X, and now you have a great system that will allow for full res video editing, with the QNAP as your fast storage device.

Great suggestion, Bob.

The only reason I moved up to the h1288x was to use the VM as my editing station as suggested by my reseller. I don't believe the order has been processed yet so I can swap it out for a lower priced unit that will help offset the cost of the Mac Mini.
Any suggestions for a replacement? I want six - 16 or 18TB drives in a RAID 6 and have two spares.
Curious to know people's experience with HGST, WD or Seagate drives in the $300-$350 price range.

This is all new to me so I appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Rob

Looks like the TVS-872X 8 Bay might be a good option.

Bob Zelin confirmed that you need to use the GPU's specified in QNAP's compatibility doc:

Thanks Bob!

HGST does not exist any longer. HGST became the WD RED series - specifically the WD RED Pro.
These days, I am only using Seagate EXOS drives. They are cheap, and are fantastic, with a great 5 year warranty.

You can find Seagate EXOS x18 18 TB drives on Amazon for $320 every day.
The TVS-872XT will blow up on you. It blows up on everyone ! Search this forum, and other forums - you will see, I am not kidding.
