My TVS-872XT died today. Even after removal of all discs it would not restart.
Red led on the motherboard is on.
Unit is from March 2019. Made a ticket today at QNAP service.

I’m sorted. They swapped out my 872n for a new 872x. Upgraded the firmware on the new one (with a single disk installed). Shut it down replaced all my existing disks and all good.
I would have loved to NOW be able to purchase an extended warranty but it seems that’s not possible. If I look up the warranty for the replacement unit, it still starts from the original units purchase date, though they have extended to 3 years. I guess the odds are that in 2 years the replacement will also die.

Don't expect QNAP to extend te warranty beyond 3 years. Got an offer today to have the unit repaired for $750,-. Feels a bit unfair to ask this amount of money to repair a factory defect.
New the unit was $2.000,- and it has worked for 3 years and 3 months. That's a bit above $600,- per year. Adding the rest of the time till the 5 year period will cost the above mentioned $750. (When the repaired unit keeps working beyond the middle of this year when the repair warranty runs out.)
Not sure that I see a reason to repair the machine for this amount of money. Last time I had a repair from QNAP it took them several months to do the repair and an additional several weeks to send me back the front cover of my repaired unit.

Yeah, and the track record for my QNAP devices is already bad.
My first nas (TS509pro) died in the first month.
My second nas (TS859) still going strong after a lot of years. (But is no longer supported)
My third nas (TS653B) died after I inserted a QNAP 10Gb / nvme card. >> The new card was the culprit.
My fourth nas (TVS-872XT) died after 3 years and 3 months.
Now I have to decide what to do next...
Lost small amounts of data each time, but lost massive amounts of time and effort. Buying a new TVS-872XT will be the fastest solution, but 3 years of use out of a device does not feel right.

TrueNas with a mainstream PC or even a server motherboard, you'll have more control over the whole process and less reliance on a single manufacturer and single component. There are plenty of really nice NAS cases out there as well.

I just had my 872XT failed the 3rd time. I bought it in Nov 2019, had gone through two RMAs after 18 and 23 months respectively, which took over a month shipping back and forth to Taiwan. Now it's at 32 months and I've just logged a ticket. Frankly, whether they can repair it for me again for free or at some charge, I am totally disappointed with QNAP products. On the bright side, I've brought 2 large external harddisks in TR002 enclosure to regularly sync all files from the 872XT after my 2nd RMA. So now I can move to other brands next, without worrying about data recovery.

My TVS-672XT died today after a normal reboot! I checked the PSU and then found this thread. I verified the red led on the motherboard is on just like others here. I purchased the unit exactly 2 years ago August 7, 2020. I've submitted a ticket to QNAP support.

Looking into TrueNas. Looks very good and for the money I would have to pay for a QNAP replacement device I can build a real powerhouse. There are messages here that are supposed to be from Qnap support representatives that they have been given the instruction that these obvious manufacturing faults should be covered by a warranty extension and there are many reports from other customers that have had their warranties extended with at least a year. A related question, do we know if the s/n 21 and s/n 22 manufacturing batches of the same model have the same (or any other manufacturing) defect? Or is it too early to say?
After I escalated my issue through QNAP support, QNAP kindly agreed to extend my warranty by 12 months in order to facilitate in-warranty repair. It took about a week for the RMA approval to come through and support was helpful to push the matter internally to get the RMA approved. Packed and shipped my unit to Taiwan - set me back about USD 120. Took 2 days to arrive in Taiwan, the repair took 3 days and the shipment back another 2 days. Apparently, the power supply was kaput! Reinstalled my RAM, NVME card and hard drives. Switched on and the unit is working great with all my data intact! Now the worry is if and/or when it is going to breakdown again!! Fingers crossed.

Check the board version... Ver. 1.0, 1.3, and 1.5 all have had problems. Ver. 1.7 has not...
