Very grateful for this thread!
So just to clarify did you have a motherboard failure or was it just your PSU?
From what tech support told me, it was just the PSU which failed.

Greetings,

Looking at purchasing a TVS-672XT to replace one of my older QNAP units. This thread has been great. Just out of curiosity are there checks I can make to lower the possibility of buying a problematic unit i.e. prior to purchase? I've read the earlier units were an issue, but might my risk be lowered if I buy a later version? I am wondering if there's a manufacturing date etc? Thanks again for an awesome thread, much appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

Add another TVS-872XT to the list.
The unit was up for almost 300 days and I thought a reset would be good...but after the shutdown sequence the unit shut off, never to return to life again. And of course I had the Brilliant idea of doing that the day before the daily backups.

Same problems as everyone else: network card LEDs on, red LED on motherboard. From what I gather, this is due to a faulty motherboard and not a faulty PSU, right?

Anyway, unit serial is Q18xxxxxxx, board version 1.3; warranty expired on April 2021, and still waiting a reply from QNAP support.

I've added a board revision column in the spreadsheet. If it's written upon reporting I will add it. Not sure I'm going to go back through the whole thread though as the revision numbers were seldom stated in the original post. Open to ideas about it.

Just found out about this after having the same issue.

672XT, running perfect for about 2-3 years.
Last week when i was on the run, traveling:
*My zabbix system went nuts, alarming on all my VMs on a proxmox machine that stores all disks on the NAS.
*SSHd in, rebooted the proxmox host.
*Realized it had issues with mounting the NAS.
*Rebooted the NAS, because stuff had frozen.
*Dead

Perfect.

Just got a reply from QNAP support: the NAS is faulty, warranty has expired (they didn't say anything about extending the warranty), send the unit to the RMA center in the Netherlands, and the quotation app on QNAP website points out to around €1000 for repair. And they already said that this could take a while due to time of the year, COVID, and whatanot.
I've already ordered a new NAS, I'll ponder on a while whether to send this unit to repair or not.

Bought 2 in February 2020. One just died. All I did was reboot to install the latest firmware. Power button does nothing. Red light on motherboard so power supply is probably ok. ABSOLUTLEY UNNACCEPTABLE TO HAVE A KNOWN ISSUE AND NOT RECALL AND FIX! IF YOU WANT TO REALLY ** OFF YOUR EXISTING CUSTOMERS AND HAVE THEM NEVER BUY YOUR PRODUCTS AGAIN AND WARN EVERYONE TO STAY AWAY THEN, YES. PRETEND THERE IS NO ISSUE...

Sorry, I'm so mad right now I could scream. Without reading through all of the 44+ pages on this thread what's the fastest way to get my unit functional?

Open a support ticket with QNAP, hope they offer a warranty extension and replace the defective motherboard for free - shipping costs for sending the unit to their repair centre will be on your dime, of course.

I think everyone in this thread is/was in your same state of mind...and unfortunately the fastest way to get your NAS up and running again is to get a new one, unless you want to get a hold of a replacement motherboard and do replace it yourself.

My experience with QNAP support is:
* being told that "A software defect can have symptoms similar to a hardware defect" (actual quote from the first ticket reply), remove all drives from the unit, and try to power up the unit again.
* already done that, explain that "not powering up" means no LEDs, no fans, no frontal LCD, and I point to this thread
* QNAP says "warranty expired, contact local reseller"
* local reseller says "warranty expired, contact QNAP"
* Friday afternoon I reply to the ticket saying I want to start an RMA. The repair center is in Germany, so at least it's relatively near to where I live, but it's going to be expensive between shipping and actual repair

But I fully agree a recall, or at the very least a warning, should have been issued. They did that for malware few months ago, and this I feel is a much more serious issue.

In my case, 90% of the NAS was a external backup server, so no big harm like that for me.. luckily.. But still quite frustrating... this is some expensive toys, and ** like this should never happen..
I am hosting a m2 samba mount for my virtual host, a lot more important than the backup stuff that i just can replicate over one night...

So.. I bought a m2-USB-C adapter, so i hopefully can access some of the more important data quicker.
The other big SATA SSD Array... i do not know.. let it be until Qnap can help me.

I do not know if a similar solution for you is plausible, depends on your unique situation.

And that is one of the versions with issues. Versions 1.0 and 1.3 are the faulty ones. Most have been replaced with version 1.7 boards, I have not heard of anyone with versions 1.7 or 2.0 having issues...
