TS-509 network LED flashing like crazy!

Post by TheRooster2000 »

Hi all!

I'm not shure when this behavior of my TS-509 started but about two weeks ago I noticed that the Network LED is constantly flashing like crazy!
The corresponding two Port-LEDs of my switch where the QNAP is connected are flashing in the same way.
As the "bandwidth transfer" in the "resource monitor" says, there is no data transferred from or to my 509.

Was there anything changed in the current firmware concerning the network LEDs? Were there changes made in the network monitoring?
The LEDs definitely were never that nervous before and I did not change anything in my QNAP setup at all!

Same behavior when all the other devices in my network are physically disconnected.

The two LAN ports of my 509 are configured as "Active Backup".
Still to mention that "HDD standby" is not affected at all and still works fine. This confirms that no data transfer is happening.

What's going on at the LAN ports of my QNAP :?:

Help!
Christian

A hacking attempt from the outside? have you tried rebooting?
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Hi Don!

No, nothing from outside, I'm quite shure.
There's nothing in the QNAP system connection log. The only port that I have opened is one for FTP and this one's not even the standard port. I re-routed standard FTP port 21 to a completely different one.
Even if there should be an attack from outside: I configured the network access protection so that the intruder IP will be banned after 5 unsuccessful login attempts within 10 minutes.

I tried rebooting but this does not help.
BTW: My QNAP is automatically shut down every night and is restarted every morning anyway...

More ideas please?

Does noone else have the same LAN-LED issue?

Any advice is welcome!

Hi Don,

I'm not running D/L station or Xdove on my QNAP.

The only active services are FTP, NFS, SSOTS and Microsoft network.
But those services were always active and the LAN LED was not blinking some time ago.
Only 2 users have an FTP account. So there are no FTP connections at 99,9% of the time. LAN LED keeps flashing even if the are NO FTP connections.

I can deactivate SSOTS and FTP: still blinking!

No connection attempts in the system log at all except my own admin connections.

I can disconnect ALL other network devices from my switch, unplug EVERY LAN cable, even DSL router/internet connection and leave only the two LAN cables (Active Backup) of my QNAP connected: The LAN LED keeps blinking brightly!

Seems as if the QNAP is happy to play around with its LAN connection itself!

Huh... I'm running out of ideas... :|

I would use Wireshark to find out what traffic it is. Much easier than guessing and testing blindly.

If your switch doesn't support mirroring of ports you need to get (borrow?) one that can or find an old hub to see the traffic.

Hi all,

now, after days of extensive testing, after countless efforts of unplugging and replugging network cables on my switch I found out that the flashing LAN LED must have something to do with one of my desktop PCs.
I recently had to change from an "Intel PRO/1000 PT" gbit network adapter to the onboard gbit LAN device of the ASUS mainboard of one of my desktop PCs because somehow the Intel adapter got busted.
At that moment the blinking must have started! If I unplug the LAN cable of that particular PC the blinking stops immediately!
As long as I had the Intel adapter in operation the LAN LED showed normal behaviour.

The onboard LAN adapter is listed as "Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller" in the windows device manager.

Does anybody have an idea if there's a kind of a configuration trick especially for the mentioned LAN adapter to stop the LED issue?
It seems as if the LAN adapter does some kind of "checking" or something like that but there is no data transfer...

Thanks for help.

[Solved] TS-509 network LED flashing like crazy!

Post by TheRooster2000 »

Hi all,

the LED stopped flashing!

After some more days of testing my network infrastructure I found out that the reason for the insane LAN LED was nothing else than a defective Gbit switch...
I replaced the defective one with a brand new Netgear GS608 and everything is fine again :D

Nothing wrong with my QNAP or anything else. Somehow the old switch must have generated packet collisions or something like that.

Now I'm happy again!

Hello,

My NAS had this problem too, and it even became unaccessible. Turns out the problem came from my router. I unplugged the router for a few seconds and turned it on again. This solved the problem: No more unusual flashing of the LINK LED of the NAS, and the NAS is accessible again.

Thanks. I'm sure the people that had this issue 12 years ago appreciate your timely input.
