Bought an old used TP-212P for cheap. It's in good condition but the apps are outdated and being new to the NAS world I am cautious about ransomware news and qnap. So, is it possible to install a different NAS program on this TP-212P ?
I saw something about Time Machine in one of the settings. If anything, I will just keep it on the LAN and use it as a glorified Time Machine Disk.
Thanks in advance.
Can I install TrueNAS on a qnap device?

In general yes(on a modern x64 device), but not on a 15 year old ARM platform (TS-212P), just use the NAS as a NAS and do not expose it to WAN and that NAS should work just fine

My thoughts are, why would you want to?
As far as I know, a lot of the cost of QNAP devices are tied into the software and support. If you don't want to use the software, you'd be better off buying better hardware if you want to use TrueNAS
