Okay, I've rolled it back to 4.2.2, which was released in December 2016, the QNAP was working then, I've re-enabled DLNA and letting it scan the box for media files, I'll monitor it and see if it freezes again

I belief that rolling back and upgrading fw-versions does not do any good to the qnap.

as per the first post,

All 4 front HDD indicator lights rapidly flash, I cannot access the box via webpage or SSH, QNAP QFinder fails to find the box, Cannot access shared folders, only way to reset box is to kill power and push start button

DLNA has nothing to do with an unresponsive unit. DLNA is a service. What is means is that all devices with dlna support can talk to each other.

Can yo remove all HD's 1 inch out of their socket ( not out of the NAS ), and startup the nas?

If you have backups, you should go for it.

I have already performed a fresh install, the problem persisted once DLNA was enabled and it started generating thumbnails

Have you tried running the QNAP Diagnostic Tool?
Could be faulty memory that is causing the issue.

Edit: Another thing: Maybe try the PC trick of unplugging the power and removing the CR2032 button battery for a while.
That fixed a PC Motherboard of mine that was acting 'strange'.

Do not make his issue more complicated.
I belief he has either to many files that enables dlna to make thumbnails, with an unresponive unit as a result.
or an issue, caused by up and downgrading of the fw.

I have run the diagnostic tool, RAM came back fine!

I have performed a FRESH install of the firmware and the problem persisted, I dont think it can be the update/downgrade of firmware if it is running on a fresh install

I am starting to believe your first thought is correct, the box simple cannot handle the amount of files I have on the drives, looking at resource management it seems to fill the RAM very quickly then stops responding, I believe its trying to perform its function and continuously swap between RAM and SWAP, causing the unit to become non responsive, I may have to upgrade the box to a better model that I can upgrade the RAM in.

Unless there is another suggestion?

Move small amounts of files to your desired directory, lets say 10 Gb everytime or so, or 5 Gb
Or buy yourself a new NAS that has more horsepower and RAM than your TS-431.

Code: Select all

CPU	Freescale™ ARM®v7 Cortex®-A9 dual-core 1.2GHz processor
Floating Point Unit
Hardware Encryption Engine
DRAM	512MB
Flash Memory	512MB
Hard Disk Drive	4 x 3.5" or 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s, SATA 3Gb/s HDD or SSD

Have you tried disabling your virusscanner in the NAS, that was my same problem. Never had it again. You could also try to disable transcoding as I did in SERVIIO.
