Anti Virus Options?

Post by RonRock »

Is McAffe the only option for AV on a QNAP NAS?

I personally dislike McAffe from long ago issues. I have used Avast for years now and have never been disappointed in it. I asked about Avast on a QNAP NAS over on the Avast forum, but did not receive any useful information.

mainly virus scans should be done on the clients...and the two available scanners only scan the user data and do not protect the nas itself

No, you also have ClamAV that's best known for it's many false positives and failing signature updates. I wouldn't recommend it!
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

The OP asks for AV alternatives on the NAS.

RonRock, you have ClamAV which is built into the firmware and set as default, OR McAfee. I use both of different NAS's my Main NAS TVS-463 uses McAfee, my Backup NAS uses ClamAV.

No use arguing with a SEO spambot (or possible referral Spam) .. could you take that spam link out of the quote too ? :P

install AV on the client of your choice .. don't bog your NAS CPU with those tasks

Of course. My NAS is the client in this case. That's why I need a suitable AV solution for the NAS itself.

I have a monitor, mouse, and keyboard connected directly to the NAS. The NAS is connected to the internet. I use it (sometimes) just like a PC. I need protection from all the scary stuff.

As already answered in the thread, the only alternative that run directly in the NAS is ClamAV. Many have tried to use it and almost all of us have given up on it.

For those that are fans of Avast (or any other AV solution) and have a capable NAS, you could have the AV of your choice running in a VM in Virtualization Station on the NAS.
