TS-410 - qsyslogd High CPU Load (> 90%)

Post by danilo.schembri »

Hi,

I own a little (and old) TS-410.

Recently (after last update to latest firmware available) CPU runs always over 90%; I was never used to ear my NAS fan. :)

'top' command says me that the process which uses a lot of CPU is qsyslogd; that's a system process, so I can't stop it to save CPU.

Any ideas?

Re: TS-410 - qsyslogd Hi CPU Load (> 90%)

Post by schumaku »

Hi Danilo,

Check if t:here is free space in /mnt/HDA_ROOT

[~] # df | grep HDA_ROOT
/dev/md9 509.5M 138.0M 371.5M 27% /mnt/HDA_ROOT

If it's not in the 99...100% range:

Find the qsylog PID (8815 in this example)...

[~] # ps -ef | grep qsyslog
8815 admin 1252 S /sbin/qsyslogd
30739 admin 580 S grep qsyslog

....kill the process...

[~] # kill 8815

...remove a probably cumbersome event.log file...

[~] # rm /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log

...and find (all the above must be done within 60 seconds) the system watchdog will restart the qsyslogd, and the file will be recreated (empty of course):

[~] # ps -ef | grep qsyslog
31037 admin 1280 S /sbin/qsyslogd
31051 admin 568 S grep qsyslog
[~] # ls -als /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log
0 -rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 0 Jun 20 11:51 /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log

Hi schumaku, thank you for your answer.

You already know there is space (it's at 27% of its full size); myabe I didn't understand your answer.

Then a question: why to remove event.log file and not to

Code: Select all

cat /dev/null > /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log
it :?: (usually I don't like to remove files - unless they're mine :DD )

So, I'm not used to input commands which I don't fully understand; I killed qsyslogd: it restarted immediately and everything is working fine (it seems...).

Does anybody have ideas on the reason about this issue?

I have /mnt/ext 100% full, but I don't know if it should be the reason.

Thank you for reading.
Regards.

I'm also seeing qsyslogd running at hi CPU ....it's difficult to connect via web interface and impossible via mobile app. I'm going to try killin qsyslogd ( /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log only has few old messages in it, it's not over large)

Code: Select all

/share/MD0_DATA/Public/rtmp] # script
-sh: script: command not found

[/share/MD0_DATA/Public/rtmp] # ps | grep qsyslog
12191 admin 564 S /sbin/qsyslogd
22496 admin 568 S grep qsyslog

[/share/MD0_DATA/Public/rtmp] # ls -l /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 520192 Apr 7 11:08 /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log
[/share/MD0_DATA/Public/rtmp] # kill 12191
[/share/MD0_DATA/Public/rtmp] # ps | grep qsyslog
23416 admin 568 S grep qsyslog
[/share/MD0_DATA/Public/rtmp] #
It's respawned at a low CPU, not appearing on top.

event log not hugely affected:

Code: Select all

/share/MD0_DATA/Public/rtmp] # ls -l /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 admin administ 520192 Apr 7 11:08 /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/event.log
Locked
