add two more to the list. a 672xt and 872xt as my 672xt was my backup unit. 872xt purchased used and the 672 purchased new in 2019. my warranty expired a month ago. going to see what it will cost to replace but right now just thinking of getting a new one to offload the data since i can get a new one in a day and then go back to my EqualLogics or maybe unRAID. Or get a unit like Bob has been pitching the QNAP TVS-h1288X . For some reason after reading his posts and checking out his site we would probably hit it off. I'm in the stream and content creator business but on the eSports side. we turn and burn quick so I really hope this is just a bad batch but i'm kind of ** hurt my warranty ended so close to this red light of death situation. Something i never had to deal with when i worked on much larger storage arrays but unlike QNAP those were pricey. That was the beauty of QNAP. Cheap fast and flexible. lets hope my ticket produces something of value but as of now i'm looking for the best way to get my data back fast. restoring it will take too long in this particular case and i just offloaded a few TB of raw video data and didn't ven have a chance to put it on tape yet before the client took off.

So will getting the same exact until do the trick? Just transfer drives over and turn her on or ? I guess i have some research to do.

Yes moving all storage media over to one of the same model should definitely work. Moving between different models often work as well but not always. To be safe, always check the Qnap migration page for compatibility.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

I haven't had the "dead after shutdown"-issue, but I sent RMAed my TVS-872XT back yesterday. Outside the warranty period, but I logged the first ticket over a year ago, and QNAP agreed this was a warranty case. I would have freeze-ups on my NAS, and the only remedy was to cold stop/start and deal with the consequences. My MoBo was ver. 1.3, and I will let you know what I get back...

On another note, when I get the replacement NAS, it will obviously have a new serial number and MACs, but everything should be the same, right? And all I do is 1) turn it on, 2) update FW (diskless) via QFinder Pro, and then 3) turn it off, 4) insert my HDDs and SSDs (Cache), and 5) turn it on, and I am back to normal... This process is stressing me out a bit, as I really need it back to normal without too much fuss.

process is right....stress should be limited, with current external backups

LOL - true dat. I have back ups, in plural actually.

I have a backup NAS which is completely up-to-date, and I backup my important data regularly onto external Lacie drives (which I circulate between home and our bank vault). In a previous life I was a professional photographer... If only I could find a cloud storage that was reasonably priced - I would possibly even save money.

My TVS-872Xt died too today after a normal shut down yesterday. Looks like a worldwide phenomen.

We need to have a pull to see how many actually have this issue... If it is a general issue, that would possibly amount to a warranty issue, even when the warranty has expired...

Some users on the German QNAP forum have apparently gotten the press involved... let's see how that goes

Interesting. Apparantly that is what happens when QNAP refuses to acknowledge that there is a widespread issue at all. Dont get me wrong, I really appreciated when QNAP sent me a new TVS-872xt unit just before the two year warranty expired. What is not clear is what happens when (if?) my new unit die in the same way? This leaves me with some lack of trust in the brand to be honest.

I asked QNAP Support that very question:

Bo Kristensen

...and I have a question:
What is the warranty on the NAS I am getting back?

2021-07-19 07:24:37
Sahir Badarpura

The default warranty period for the unit is for 2 years from the date for purchase that includes the one which is RMA'ed

I don't know how to interpret that answer??? I can read it both ways; that it is 2 years from initial purchase date, but also that all units have 2 years warranty.

It means your RMA unit is still under the same original warranty , the warranty period will not start over fresh

Warranty by product is found on the Warranty page.

Warranty always only count from original date of purchase.
Q11 in the warranty FAQ.

In addition to that you have a 3 months warranty on the specific parts repaired/replaced but not on the whole product.
Q12 in the warranty FAQ.

Depending on jurisdiction consumer rights may offer additional protection for the customer (may not apply if the unit is bought by a business). Check out the consumer rights in your country!

I can't speak for other countries, but in Australia, you're only covered by warranty from the original purchase date.

Example: you purchase an item. That item is covered by warranty for 12 months. After 11 months, the item becomes faulty and is immediately replaced by the manufacturer. At-best, you have 1 month of warranty left on the replacement unit. The manufacturer is only required to support their product within the original warranty period. That period is not extended because the customer received a free replacement or repair.

If the repair was paid-for by the customer, then a separate warranty period is applied (usually 3 months).

Most new items for sale have a legally-required 12 months warranty (which can be longer if the item is expensive - it depends on the item).

Note: I'm not a consumer affairs lawyer. ;)

Thanks for the interpretation... As I understand it then is that at best I might have 3 months of warranty on the part that is replace (Motherboard). DAMN.

I guess it is then even more important to have up-to-date backups...

Reading all the responses - I realise I was not being clear. I have also learned from the (really nice) QNAP support that I have a 2 year warranty - full stop. Regardess of any replacement units.

My point: I cannot trust the unit and when (if?) it breaks I need to purchase a new (or used) unit. I find it a bit nerve wrecking with client work in the pipeline. I think the number of units breaking down cause QNAP som cost. Is it worth the brand damage by just being silent?
