No, it shouldn't make a difference. Hardware failure of a storage system at any time should always be considered. If the backup strategy haven't been able to cope with that, then it have been insufficient.

It may affect the strategies regarding reliability, immediate data availability and many other things though.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

I got a response back last night in which it was transferred to another support individual and after reading his response it dawned on me a ticket was opened in January for a random shutdown and closed with no real solution since it just stopped happening. So they just attached this case to that ticket and boom RMA approved and sending it in. I have it being delivered today since I'm only a few hours from the RMA location so hopefully this speeds it up. So pretty cool that QNAP on their own approved my RMA even out of warranty by attaching it to an old ticket. Makes sense but cool that they just made that happen. I was also sent a drive from my client with a "** happens smile face" so all is good in the world right now. Besides the fact i have no life but that's cool. we're content creators lol.

I'm pretty convinced this was a batch issue with 1.3 so moving forward i'll just have some backups but still thinking about going to something a little larger. QNAP has not done me wrong yet but i guess i'm not out of the woods yet. I'll update more if things change. I would love to have a better look at the board to see if anything has physically faulted to the point of a visual indicator but since they are going to take the whole unit back i'm guessing i'll get a new one and move on. hate not exactly knowing what happened. I'm also kind of happy it wasn't the power supply since it seems this version is like MIA (the 02 not 01)

Like I said my 872XT (in RMA) was a ver. 1.3 MoBo, but it wasn't stopping entirely after shut-down. It locked up during normal operations, and that happend with no rhyme or reason. I would literally have to hard shut down the NAS to get it going again.

I am about to do a cpu swap, my motherboard revision is ver 1.7, will take some pics and upload, hopefully can be of help.

With all the failed x72XT's, were all board revisions 1.3?? Quite paranoid now lol, I literally bought this as an upgrade to my 453b and only stumbled across this thread after I put in my SSDs in :|

There are thousands of these units in circulation and only a handful have had issues. I have been running my ver. 1.3 872XT 24/7 for over two years. 8 HDDs and 2 SSDs... The issue I had/have was sudden freezes. I am literally waiting for my RMA unit right now, and I am still not worried.

Thats good. Worrying does not help.

However, when Bob Zelin who installed quite a few 872xt units says it is noticable many among his installed customer base it is clearly more than a handful on a global scale.

I’d say it is a handful who managed to find this thread. Actual numbers of affected units are probably (I’m guessing based on my experience, this thread and gut-feeling) much higher.

Naturally, my new replaced 872xt unit is backed up daily but my trust in the unit is still not repaired.

Especially since QNAP is doing a ”silent run” on the topic.

I can confirm that the TVS-872XT I got back was a ver. 1.7.

I sent in a ver. 1.3, and got a ver. 1.7 back. The FW was 4.4.1, which is obviously a while ago...

My TVS-672N died, sent it in, was replaced and put the disks back in, works like a charm. For me in Switzerland it seems to be complicated to get a 5 year warranty as it seems that the warranty extension is not sold in Switzerland. Bummer.

Hi,

I Have a TVS-972XU received end of july, 10 days later after finishing my installation and transfering all the files the nas suddenly stopped (no red light at that time).
RMA then received a new unit (QTS4.4 won't update to 4.5 with my disk on) that died a couple of hours later with the red light this time.
It the first time I have a dead QNAP (once a Synology DS411+ with a dead PSU)

I'm gone read the entire topic to see if I can find a solution but the x72 series seems to be doomed as the synology x15+ series was for synology a while ago...

That is how it is supposed to work. As per QNAP, you need to update the FW in the NAS BEFORE you put the disks back in. The FW in the NAS must ALWAYS be higher or the same as the FW on the disks.

I would not say the x72XT series is doomed. It has been out for almost three years now, and there are plenty (read thousands) of units that have no issues. There are some that have experienced problems, and QNAP has replaced these.

What you should do is "Update Firmware", using Qfinder Pro, BEFORE you insert any disks at all... It takes a few minutes, and then when it is done, you insert your disks. The first time you boot up, it will take forever - literally 25-30 minutes. And when you are back up and running, go in and run a FW update again, this time using QTS.

I get it but nevertheless the nas died once i did it and is now redblinking as many if the x72 of this topic. I do not think that my mistake caused the hardware failure...
