Alternative OS Qnap

Post by mchipser »

My current TS-669L is coming to EOL next month so I replaced it with a TVS-671, but would rather not have to throw away still working tech.. Is there any way to insall an alternative OS on this? I found this, but it seems to be outdated..

There are a few different ways to install a different OS on a QNAP NAS, however each way requires varying levels of technical knowledge. While doing so may be a fun thing to try out, there really is little reason to do so.

As long as the QTS admin web page and QTS apps are not exposed to the Internet, the NAS should keeping humming along just fine.

I still have a couple of TS-509’s (circa 2008) running QTS 3.3.6, and they’re chugging along just fine. EOL != useless.

if you search the forum, someone did a project where they installed unraid to replace qts. reason being their qnap model eol, so they replaced with a substitute. In one other instance, another use went further and removed the DOM component in the NAS, since that is only used for installing QTS.

unraid requires a license purchase i believe.

Due to security problems - Steve Gibson now reports he will never advise anyone use a Qnap, and if possible you should replace QTS with some other OS. As a minimum do not expose any part of the nas to the internet.
Just saying.
1x TS-412 3x WD2003YYS (Enterprise) 1x WD20EFRX (Green) [Raid 0]
1x TS-412 3x WDC ED30EFRX (Red) 1X ST3000VN007 (IronWolf) [Raid 5]
1x TS-412 2x WD20EZRX (GREEN) & 2x WD20EARS (Green) [Raid 5]
1x TS-859pro 4x WD30EFRX (RED) & 4X ST3000VN007 (IronWolf) [Raid 5]
1x TS-869pro 8X HGST HDS724040ALE640 - (DeskTop) [Raid 5]
1x WDSharespace 4xWDC WD2003YYS (Enterprise) [Raid 0] - The worst NAS I have ever owned.
5x WD MybookWorld White light Edition (Which are fitted with WD Green drives as standard) also rubbish

Maybe Steve Gibson (not sure why he would matter more than any other software engineer anyway) should also advise anyone who puts their life's work or business critical data, on any NAS with no back ups, to just format all the data and go live on an island also?

As poor as QNAP's marketing and security has been, it still does not alleviate a person of their responsibility to establish a personal ownership and protection scheme for the important data in their life.
NAS:
TS-453Be
2-4 Gig QNAP ram sticks
1x12 TB Seagate Iron Wolf and 3x12 TB Seagate Exos
Mainly used as a Plex Server and Photo manager (QuMagie is actually pretty good)

WD 12 TB Elements for each hard drive - External HD BU to the NAS movie database and Photos

Migrated my second NAS to TrueNAS CORE ahead of schedule. Now I have the whole long weekend to chill with beers and buds.

Like many on this toxic forum, you assume far to much. Not everyone has their life's work - business or any critical data on any nas with no backup. As for Steve Gibson he is a whale compared to the likes of you mate. You need to understand that if you don't have anything to add - you should not post..

Not sure if you meant me dolbyman, I should have put "toxic" in quotes, I meant it as sarcasm. I think this forums are really good to use and most everyone here helps as they best can at their availability

I meant umpa ... he mentioned in his first sentence that the forum is "toxic".

We probably getting called fanboys next for not burning our QNAPs immediately.

I have used Steve Gibson's software and tools in the past and I don't doubt his capabilities or knowlage, but you (Skwor) made valid points about backups and personal risk mitigation responsibility. Not sure why umpa is fighting other peoples fight here.
