Qnap QSW-1208-8C 12-Port Unmanaged 10GbE Switch SET UP

Post by HC83BGO »

Hello, First off I apologize if I am missing something incredibly simple, but I can't seem to find a solution and want to see if anyone has any guidance. I own a Qnap QSW-1208-8C 12-Port Unmanaged 10GbE Switch and a ts-h1683xu-rp NAS. We have multiple video editors and have out grown swapping out tons of drives and sharing data. Also we need a lot of storage. We have 5 computers all with 10G ethernet ports on them and are trying to get them all hooked up to our NAS SERVER. We have two linked directly from the NAS to the computers with RJ45 connections and they are working great. We would like to set up 2 more RJ45 connections with room to grow, Hence why we have the switch. The problem is that I know what IP address to set on the two computers directly connected to the NAS because I see what they are in the Qfinder PRO app. (EX....... IP: 169.254.7.109, SUBNET: 255.255.255.0) that is no issue. If I am using an unmanaged switch, which I understand is "unmanaged" and plug and play. How do I know what IP address to assign to the other computers to have a a connection from the switch to my computers to operate with the same 10G connection? Hopefully that makes since and I have provided enough information. Again I apologize if this is elementary knowledge, we are new to the NAS game and learning how to expand. We knew it was time to upgrade to the NAS, we are just learning along the way.

Thank you for any help!

Based on the IP's .. either introduce a DHCP server into your Network or work with static IP's

Those zeroconf adresses (169.254.x.y) are not usable

Hey thanks for the help. I might be missing something. That works great for connecting to the internet but I'm trying to make the connection to my NAS. That still doesn't seem to be working even with a static IP address set up. I have my router connected to my switch, then I have my switch connected to my NAS. Then I have my Switch connected to my computer.

Do you have a DHCP server running on the router ?

I have a feeling you connected the clients directly to the 10GbE ports of the QNAP .. correct ?

The correct connection would be:

Router connected with one port to the QSW
NAS connected with one 10GbE port to the QSW
All clients connected to the QSW

This way the DHCP server (router) can assign IP's to all clients

stop using self assigned IP addresses. 169.254.xxx.xxx

You have an unmanaged switch - the QSW-1208-8C. You should have purchased the managed QSW-M1208-8C.
But you have what you have.
Go into the QNAP QuTS user interface Control Panel Network, and make your 10G port 192.168.2.3. Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0. MTU 9000
on your computers -
make the first computer 192.168.2.11. 255.255.255.0. MTU 9000
Make the second computer 192.168.2.12. 255.255.255.0
third computer - 192.168.2.13. 255.255.255.0
fourth computer - 192.168.2.14. 255.255.255.0
fifth computer - 192.168.2.15. 255.255.255.0

You did not say Mac or PC - I will assume Mac for now.
On the Mac, click on GO> Connect To Server> smb://192.168.2.3
the QNAP will mount (enter the name and password).
That's it - you will now have a reliable connection.

And stop using Qfinder Pro to connect.
