QNAP TS-251 Trouble

Post by srek »

Hi all,

Sorry in advance if I've posted to the wrong area, but I'm not sure what my issue is...
I have a TS-251 with two HDDs installed, I split my data across the drives (no raid) and have a set of shared folders, a couple on each drive.
Today I have found:
  • I can't login to the admin console
  • I can't access any shared folders
  • I can't ping the device from my PC (I usually can)
Checking Physically
On the front panel there is a single, solid, red light (HDD 1) , so it's possible:
  • The HDD has run out of space (Please let this be the cause)
  • The HDD has failed
Using Qfinder
I've had to directly connect my PC to LAN 1 on the NAS for Qfinder to see the device, Then I could see Qfinder shows there might be a disk issue, but....
I'm unable to access any tools in Qfinder, other than the Configuration option (Which isn't any help in this case).
When I attempt to use, Details, Resource Monitor etc I receive the following message:
Login Failed. There was no response from the server

My Questions
I have so many, but let me filter out only a few...
  • Why can't I access the the web interface?
  • Why won't it respond to a ping?
  • Why can't I access the shared folders on HDD2?
  • Can I recover anything from HDD1 ( I know you'd only be guessing, but give me some hope please) ?
What I'm hoping is that the configuration/setup isn't lost
  • Do I simply cut my losses and replace HDD1 - loosing all my data etc?
Hoping you can help,
Srek

important data and no backups and no raid?

see if you can apply the 100ohm resistor to fix the nas (forum search)

Thanks dolbyman, interesting bug/issue with Intel based systems.
It's definitely a possibility given the lack of access I have.

Loss of data isn't really my big issue, I'm more interested/worried about the other symptoms, and if the unit is actually dead.
I'll look a little further into it.

Cheers,

Update
I started a little testing
took both HDD1 & HDD2 out of the unit
I've placed a spare HDD in slot 1
Powered on the unit, it's working so appears it's a HDD issue
After a little config/update of firmware I can access the unit as before.

Cofirmation
I've now plugged HDD1 into slot 2 to confirm
The unit is reporting SMART errors on the disk - so that confirms it.

Question
Given my previous config (with separate disks/storage - no RAID)
Can I add HDD2 back in slot 2 and access all the data on it?
How do I configure the unit to recognize the previous setup (folders, files & shares)?
