Subs won't play on TS-212
Hi, I have a QNAP-TS-212E NAS and have tried to find out why subs (.srt files) are not recognized and won't play along with the Film (.mp4) without success? I have a small collection of foreign movies that I would like to watch and understand, sadly I cannot because the .srt subs don't play. Is there anything that I can do to get them to play? Do I need to download an app or tick a box or something that would activate the playing of the subs files?
Thanks, Gael.
Thanks, Gael.

Re: Subs won't play on TS-212
no info given on how anything is played
as that nas has no video output, my guess is the qnap only holds the files and videos are played external
what are you using ? best would be kodi/vlc/etc..they can all play srt files

Re: Subs won't play on TS-212
I normally play the movies from the NAS on the TV. The thing is that if I play the files through the computer, the subs play just fine.
I was wondering if it is possible to install VLC on the NAS, maybe the NAS will play the subs (.srt) files. I'll check it out!

the TS-212 has no video output .. so that is not an option
So I doubt that you "normally play your files from the NAS"

Okay, I guess I'll have to play foreign language movies with subs from a USB device via my video player.
Question; do any of the more modern NAS's play .srt sub files?

Re: Subs won't play on TS-212
you did not answer my question from the first post
I asked what do you use as a player..you said the NAS..I said that is not possible...so what is it now?
use the NAS as NAS and any network player that can playback from SMB will work fine

Re: Subs won't play on TS-212
I have the NAS connect to my LG Smart TV and I have a menu that goes - NAS(name) - Video - By Folder - (My Name) and then I am able to choose whether I want TV Programs, Music or Movies. If I choose movies another menu appears with the categories that I have arranged the movies in. Choosing the movie I wish to watch, I simply click on it and it automatically plays. I guess the playing is done by the Smart TV if as you suggest that the NAS only stores the files. however, for the sake of clarity, I moved the foreign movie files, including the .srt files to a USB storage device that is connected directly to the Smart TV, and the movie plays with subtitles. My conclusion is the same as yours that the NAS I have does not facilitate the playing of separate subtitle files. I hope that is clear enough and answers your question.
Thanks for all your help, it's invaluable.
Gael.

Re: Subs won't play on TS-212
seems you are using DLNA ... if you are using the qnap DLNA server , try twonky (free on your decade old NAS)
if subtitles still do not work, then the DLNA client of your TV does not support srt playback
if you buy a cheap android box and install kodi, your subtitles will work

Thanks for the advice. I may give twonky a look.
Yes, I am at present using the QNAP DLNA server.
I do have an android box but very rarely use it ... another option!

Re: Subs won't play on TS-212
I had a look at Twonky and discovered that I must have used Twonky many years ago because I was unable to login because I can't remember my password. There appears to be no way of finding out what my password is, also there is no link to change the password. Plex is no longer an option, so if I can't fix the password problem, I can't use Twonky. Has anybody had this problem and overcome it, I'd like to know how?
Thanks,
Gael.

Re: Subs won't play on TS-212
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do that. The last time I tried to setup ssh I made a mess of it and had to reset the system.
Unless you know of an easy way to setup ssh I'm afraid I may break the system again (figuratively speaking).
I'm not a techie, I'm a writer and much of what goes on under the bonnet is beyond my capabilities.
Thank you for your patience.

Re: Subs won't play on TS-212
not much to setup
if you use windows10, ssh is already builtin, so you just open a cmd window and type
and then enter your password,
if you are not on windows10, you can just dowload putty ..it's a simple exe file, no need to install it, you just run it
if you use windows10, ssh is already builtin, so you just open a cmd window and type
Code: Select all
ssh admin@yournasip

All I get is 'connection refused'dolbyman wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 8:11 pm not much to setup

I even turned off the firewall ... same result.
I tried Putty and I get exactly the same ... 'Putty Fatal Error ... connection refused.'
