cat7 flat cables?

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

i recently replace a broke cat6 cable for a cat7 which was roughly for the same price. But it's a flat cable.... what's the difference exactly between a flat cable vs a regular rounded one?

The choice was between a THICk rounded cat 6 cable, or a flat cable cat7.

Are flat cables any good?

There was also one option for a ugreen cable but it was a rounded thin cable... which made me wonder how good is it when compared to the thick rounded cable :S

i did some research of my own before asking, but could use fillers for the parts i don't know :(

A few months go, I found my local IT store only sells flat Cat7 cables. I've been replacing my old, worn-out Cat5e cables with the flat ones and haven't had any issues (but my network is only 1Gb/s).

so basically it shouldn't be an issue.

i was just wary because on the online marketplace there are a lot of dodgy cables. so i have to do my homework before i purchase. a lot of the previous cables i own were like that hence why i had to replace them :{

also the old advice use to be to go for cat6A rather than cat5 because it's cheap enough to make the leap. But now i see cat 7 prices are not too shabby as well. then again when i looked there was a sale going on, so maybe that was not the usual price :}

For the ethernet cable in the wall i used a cat 6a. But after looking youtube they said to use cat7 for that... but that was the only available cable i had on hand which was already bought.... but at least it was correctly a solid copper cable .... should last at least 10 years supposedly? (cat 7 is 15 years). Anyway if it does become reliable then, i can just fish the cable through that cable to replace it. The initial drilling was the hard part (it was so noisy i had to move elsewhere while the contractors did that work :( )
