Performance Issue: 10k - 20k ms latency

Post by banditti »

Config:

TS-453Be
Firmware 4.5.4.1741
16GB memory
(4) HUH721010ALE600 (7200 RPM, 6Gb/s, 256MB cache - RAID 5
QM2-2S
(2) PNT CS900 M.2 SATA 1TB RAID 1
Cache Acceleration R/W

I use it for file shares and NFS backup destination target. No iSCSI

Monsterous latency. 10K ms - 20k ms.
When I look at Resource Monitor, Disk Activity the 7200's are 2-4MS and the one of the M.2 is very high and the second M.2 is high, but about half.
I did run a "check file system" sector check, took forever, no issues.
I killed snapshots, no change.

What am I missing? Sould I not be R/W cache acceleration? I was hoping it would help run backups quicker at night and help with performance on the most common accessed files.

What say you?

Thank you in advance!

Update: I killed the RAID1 and created a RAID0, R/W cache. it peaks about 158ms latency now doing a full Veeam backup. Went from about 20MB throughput to 120MB throughput.

So either I do read only cache, have horrible performance or I risk data corruption. Lame choices TBH

For long sequential operations (like backups), forget cache ... (read or write) ..is your network connection the stock 1GbE? ...why even bother with cache ?

Network is stock 1GbE. Why not use cache? If you have a much faster place to land data why not use it?

I removed the cache from the backup volume. Dropped from 120MB to 90MB. Latencey doubled.

As I said ..for sequential loads you will never reach anything more than 1GbE speeds..what is the cache for? A single HDD can saturate that easily

There is already a large thread where people talk about cache having detrimental effect on speeds

I get I won't reach more than 1GbE, but 20mb is far from that. Thanks
