Qnap Disks in standby but lights are still on.

Post by file-moon »

Hi,

As far as I understand manual for every disk in standby mode disk indicator light should be off.
I do have some disks in standby mode but all hdd indicators are always on.

# hdparm -C /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
drive state is: active/idle

# hdparm -C /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
drive state is: active/idle

# hdparm -C /dev/sdc
/dev/sdc:
drive state is: standby

# hdparm -C /dev/sdd
/dev/sdd:
drive state is: standby

# hdparm -C /dev/sde
/dev/sde:
drive state is: standby

# hdparm -C /dev/sdf
/dev/sdf:
drive state is: standby

# hdparm -C /dev/sdg
/dev/sdg:
drive state is: active/idle

# hdparm -C /dev/sdh
/dev/sdh:
drive state is: active/idle

Am I missing something?

You don't tell us what disk models you use (nor what QTS version and build is running on what NAS model) so we can only speculate but a wild guess is that some disks have spun down on their own.

As far as I know, if it's the Qnap that spin the disks down it's all or nothing. They will all be set to standby and the disk lights (all of them) will go out.

Edit: what I wrote in the text marked in red above is incorrect! The information supplied by aks100 below is accurate. Thank you for the correction!

RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

I know this thread is a couple of months old, but it confused me for a while so I thought this clarification might help others.

I have just purchased a TS-453B, updated to QTS v4.4.1.1146 build 20191206, under Control Panel->Hardware->General, I see Enable disk standby mode, and it specifically mentiones that the System Status LED turns off but the Disk Status LED remains on. I checked and this is in fact what happens in my case too (disk LED on, no flashing), so as described.

It is also mentioned in the online documentation.
