Can I run system from USB drive

Post by pavel.niedoba »

I have an idea to solve spin down problems by running system from usb drive and use disks for data only. Obviously the system is not operable if there's no disks, only usb one. Is there any hack to start the nas with usb only ?

Nope, unless you ditch the QTS system and install your own OS. ;)

Hi OneCD. I have an old TS-239 pro and after at the end of the month (oct. 2017) qnap will no longer release firmware upgrades - it had a good run already. I'd like to repurpose the box into a pfsense appliance, but cannot find a guide on how to install a custom OS.

Could you please point me to a guide on how you installed Debian instead of QTS ? Thanks.
