HDDParm for TOSHIBA HDWQ140 FJ1M

Post by Tenfilip »

Hi All,

On my TS251+ I cannot use HDDParm -M to see what is the AAM setting for the HDD (which is TOSHIBA HDWQ140 FJ1M 4 TB). The drive is very loud and I have to do something about this - so I'm looking to use HDDParm to silence the thing a bit (go to 128 setting, to avoid spin down) - details: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/hdparm.

So, currently I get this error (ssh'ed as admin to device):

Code: Select all

HDIO GET ACOUSTIC failed: inappropriate ioctl for device
Problem is, I don't know the current setting of AAM or how to change it, and I am a bit afraid to connect it to my desktop PC (so that my data does not go to hell:)) just to check it and change it. I'm already using SSD as cache, however still the noise e.g. during backups is ** up (I don't get why QNAP couldnt add some rubber to collect the vibes, but nvm).

Does any one know how to get the hddparm to work or what can I use instead?

Hi and welcome to the forum. :)

Can you please post the actual command you're using that is generating that error? Then it's easier to understand what you've tried and will help others.

Hi! It's "hdparm -M /dev/sda".

The hdparm utility not part of the QNAP's specification, there is no plan to update the utility or allow the Kernel handling the ioctl beyond of the QTS operating system environment.

No other way then connect your HDD in question to another system and change it's configuration.

Which does not make sense, since this is a good function to have in NAS device.
