I have a Qnap TS-453B with two 8TB WD RED 5400rpm drives in RAID 1, for easy expand in future with RAID 5.
Issue I have is that the hard drives spin up for no reason. Have disabled as much features as possible and only SAMBA and web enabled, but still the drives spin up couple of times per day, stays spinning for an hour or so and then spin down. Hour later or two they spin up again. This also happens when the unit isnt connected to any network so their isnt anything on the network that makes the drives spin up. Have updated QTS a couple of times but same problem with all versions.
Have searched but not found a log to see what happens. A log that shows what happens in the unit, when drives spin up and down, that programs try to access the drives.
Is there a log where shows this?
TS-453B - Harddrives spin up at random

If you have a storage or RAID set, the synchronization of them makes them never stop for this very reason, they must be paired. That is the logic that I deduce.

Re: TS-453B - Harddrives spin up at random
A year later the unit still has this problem. Updated the unit to latest QTS version 5.0.0.1891 but this... bug is still active. Every 15 min the unit spins up even no network or connected to USB, only power. Every 15 min all day long it spins up. Even if it hasnt been connected to anything for over a week it still spins up every 15 min.
Is there a way to see that is causing the drives to constantly spin up like this?
Even if it is a RAID synchronization thing, cant the unit have any idea that last time it was accessed and then not spin up the drive for no reason at all? Pair the drives instead of RAID 1? Difference? Any setting to do that? Loosing data by doing it?

Re: TS-453B - Harddrives spin up at random
Just found that this was an issue in 2008 that drives for no reason spins up every 15 minute. So this problem not been fixed in 14 years?

Using the unit only as USB storage so found that I could disable some software running on the unit. None of them was on the list in this post.

yes.. all sorts of logs are constantly written to the system partition of all disks..that's the way it is...disable spindown to prevent constant start and stops for the drives
