Hot/cold storage setup with SSD/HDD combo?

Post by TOMillr »

So I still got an HS 251+ lying around that I didn't use because of the noisy hard drives constantly spinning up without anyone actually accessing the thing. Now that SSDs have become somewhat affordable, I'd like to give the device a second chance. Here's what I'd like to do and might need some assistance to actually get it done:

In the first drive bay I'd like to install a 1 or 2 TB SSD that would hold all the system files as well as often used files. Basically a form of hot-storage.

The second drive would be much larger, mechanical HDD that would hold big media files I seldomly or never really use. This would act as cold-storage.

My main objective would be to have the (noisy) HDD be in standby mode most of the time. Ideally, the HDD would only spin up, when I actively try to access a file from the HDD. Day to day use would only happen on the (silent) SSD.

How should I approach such a setup? Can I somehow decouple the SSD and HDD?

Has been discussed many times

The system partitions are spanning across all installed disks, so when logs are written, all disks will be woken up.

Just keep the NAS out of audible range and it will all be fine.
