2 questions about hard drive operation on TS-209 Pro
Hi,
Two questions about the hard drive operation on my TS-209 Pro:
1) Every 5 seconds the hard drive light flashes and makes a slight sound (as if it is accessing the drive). The only thing I am currently using the drive for is that I have mapped a network drive onto it. See all my specs below. Is this normal? Note: the status LED is blinking red because I only have 1 drive installed. Should I have configured differently?
2) What are the negative implications if the hard drive does not go to standby as promised by Qnap? In other words will this affect the useful life of the system? Aren't most modern disks designed to operate continuously?
Thanks for the help!
Details:
TS-209 Pro
Firmware 1.1.2 Build 1009T
Windows XP Pro
1 HD
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1TB SATA
Since only 1 drive, operating in RAID degraded mode
Services running: Microsoft networking
Services not running: (Web, Multimedia, FTP, Download, NFS, DDNS, MySQL all disabled)
External device: Printer setup, but not currently connected via USB
Connection speed: 100 Mbps, MTU: 1500 Bytes

Hi,
same thing here with 2 discs in RAID-1: every about 5 secs a process seems to access the discs, even when disconnected from LAN and restarted. Never goes into standby.
1. Model name - TS-209pro
2. Firmware version - Version 1.1.2 Build 1009T
3. Operation System (OS) - XP Pro
4. OS Language - German
5. Number of HDDs - 2
6. HDD model - 2 x WD5000ABYS-01TNA12.0
7. HDD capacity - 500GB
8. RAID configuration - Raid1
9. Services enabled - Microsoft networking (everything else disabled)
10. External devices - none
11. Network bandwidth/ MTU - 100 Mbps, MTU: 1500 Bytes
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Well, it's nice to hear I'm not alone!!
In fact, even with the network cable unplugged, my TS-209 flashes the hard drive LED and makes a sound like it is accessing the drive every 5 seconds.
It certainly doesn't go to standby -- even though I set the standby time to 5 minutes.
Any recommendations?
Thank you!

Thanks for that hint, but twonky service is disabled. Here is the current process list. Maybe someone from Qnap can look into this issue.Epstein wrote:First of make sure you don't have twonky set to automatic rescan. ...

HDD's don't spin down anymore
I have exactly the same problem as described above as well.
The issue started after I upgraded to the newest firmware release yesterday (TS-209)
Didn't change any system setting....twonky was and is off.

We found the issue in TS-209's 1.1.2 1009 version, and now are arranging a quick fix for it.
Cheers,

It is related to the "smart fan" (detection, a kind of service to keep the system running) to cause the side effect.
It is not harmful to your HDD, please don't worry about it.
We are working on the fix and will have more test here.
