RAID in degraded mode Read only, failed drive(s) 2

Hello,

Last week I upgraded my TS-509 Pro to the latest firmware 3.3.3 and yesterday evening my heart stopped: a red light was flashing on my NAS and on the admin the following message appeared:

RAID 5 In degraded mode Read only , Failed Drive(s): 2

From the system log I noticed the following:

I've read many more people who have issues with disks dropping out. So since it started I haven't touched my NAS and will be going to the shop soon to buy an external HDD to (hopefully) backup my data.

Does anyone have any clue what is going on? Did QNAP already come out with a statement? And more importantly, what should I do now to prevent any data loss??

That is a weird log... first disk 1 is added into the RAID, then drive 2 gives an error, then drive 3. What were you doing with the NAS? I see you just started it.

The official statement about the TS-509 problem was that it is a hardware issue, and QNAP repairs broken units. But first it must be sure yours belongs to that category, as only the initial batches had the problem.

Contact QNAP online support I'd say.

2 weeks ago, disk 2 failed. Eventually decided to remove all data and format the whole raid again...

Today 15:00, disk 3 failed.
Physical disks are just fine, what's going on!?

Actually it's not the same thing. I don't see your log having the same content Petur comment above.

I think you have the same symptoms like almost everyone else that use WD Green disks (and maybe some other disk models). Due to the disks being unavailable for the NAS for too long time during error recovery the NAS consider them lost. When tested on a PC with the manufacturer's tool on a PC they are okay as their non-RAID-compatible behaviour is by design.

I have 5 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000333AS 1TB

Looks like my data is still available, all files seem to have been copied over to an external HDD. Tonight I will restart my QNAP and let you guys know what the result is.

Indeed 4x 2TB WD EADS, wdidle 300, wdtler enabled. (after the first problem with a disk failing)

- All disks WDIDLE 300/WDTLER ON
- Redone RAID 5 EXT4
- upgraded firmware to 3.3.3

Probably not really 2 years since those disks were announced late january 2009.

I had a car and it was working perfectly and then all of a sudden it broke...

At some point every disk will develop read/write errors. It's probably gonna happen more often after 1.5 years than when brand new.

You seem confident that you have fixed your disks and of course I have no idea. Still it's your disks that keeps dropping out of the RAID.

Maybe someone else can help you?

Well, I consider myself very VERY lucky: after copying all data to an external HDD and rebooting my NAS it asked on the display to choose a RAID configuration! Logging in with SSH shows all data is lost. How nasty is that!

Right now I am configuring RAID6 (even more reliable but unfortunately less space available), and quickly copy over the external HDD.

So be warned everybody, your data can be destroyed very easily! Not sure what caused this issue, let's see how RAID6 will hold for the next couple of weeks...
