TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB

Post by procmac »

I thought it would be useful to post the result of my attempt to upgrade the RAM of my TS-459 Pro. I have upgraded the RAM with one Kingston KVR800D2S5/2G module. This is a 2GB module with a CAS latency of 5. Sofar it has been flawless and functions great.

The QNAP seems to have gained speed (although a CPU enhancement would have had far more effect if it could be possible I think). The default memory which was mounted in the QNAP TS-459 Po was one ADATA SU2S800B1G6-B module with an apparent CAS latency of 6 which would mean the module I mounted does also have a rather positive effect in CAS latency.

Cheers,

procmac

Warranty is NOT voided when the case is opened within the European Union and some other markets, even though there is a sticker applied to the case claiming it will void the warranty, when just care is given to the upgrade procedure. Have a look at this post:

I ordered the RAM module you mentioned. Works flawlessly. Now I have to migrate the data from my old NAS :(

And I just put in a G.Skill 2GB 6400 5-5-5-15. Works fine. Expect most DDR2 modules will...

Does anyone know if it's necessary to change anything for the machine to use the full 2GB?

As far as I know the recent firmware versions (for at least the past year or so and probably longer) don't require any changes and will use the available memory. You can see the utilization for instance in the GUI under System Status -> System Information.

Dam this feels good :)

Total Memory 2014.6 MB
Free Memory 1840.9 MB

hehe I've upgraded my TS-459Pro+ to 2GB :) using the soDIMM mentioned (Kingston KVR800D2S5/2G ) I can confirm that all went and system is up and running without any configuration and working even faster :)

How much of this is 'feel-good' or is there a verifiable performance increase?

From what I can see even the standard 1GB is far from being fully enabled even with a good number of services running.

Can this be done on a TS109? I haven't been able check yet whether the memory is soldered in or removeable on this NAS but if anybody knows of hand if this is possible and whats the max it can handle?

Thanks

Sorry, the RAM is not upgradeable on the TS-x09 nor any other ARM based model (TS-x10, TS-x12, or TS-x19(+))

Anyone tried to upgrading to 4GB with something like Samsung SO-DIMM DDR2 4GB 667MHz CL5 BOX. Is it even possible?

Can't work - it's a hardware limitation - only 2 GB per SO-DIMM slot is supported. So with the single slot on the TS-x39/TS-x59 Pro we're limited to 2 GB. Different with the TS-x59 Pro II where two SO-DIMM slots are available.

Hi there, I have a few questions pertaining to the TS-459 Pro series NAS devices. I appreciate any feedback, in advance! :D

I am looking at the TS-459 Pro II, and am considering buying it over the TS-459 Pro+ model because of its expandable ram. I am, however, a little perplexed as to how much ram I can throw into this thing, as most of the documentation online suggests it caps out at 3GB (DDR3 I believe, as opposed to DDR2 in previous units).

1) Is it 2GB per ram slot, or simply 1GB / 2GB (total 3GB)?

2) Am I better off buying 2 x 2GB paired sticks with really good CAS timings, or

3) Better off just buying the suggested un-even 3GB capacity (unmatched CAS timings and capacity)

4) Can you install ANY SODIMM ram in these devices (normal notebook ram)? Or does it have to be a rather specific type of ram that limits my purchase options?

And finally 8)

5) Are there any other benefits to purchasing the TS-459 Pro II over the TS-459 Pro+ ? Especially now because the TS-459 Pro+ (apparently) accepts up to 2GB? (according to one of the forums I recently came across, which sparked my questions regarding 2GB ram slots in these machines)

All of this, because if the unit is capable of operating (and hopefully registering!) 4GB ram, I would prefer to buy matched, low latency 2GB modules (2 x 2GB) to go in it.

I appreciate any feedback in this regard! :? I would like to save the money if the TS-459 Pro+ is just as quick as the TS-459 Pro II (outside of possible 3GB / 4GB ram upgrade).

Cheers,
D.
