The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format

Hi there,

Got a strange problem here.

For one or another stupid reason, my QNAP TS-879 server is not friends anymore with the TimeMachine client on my Macbook (same on my other Macs, so it's not a problem on a machine)

TimeMachine gives an error message saying:

"The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required"

Huh?? My QNAP IS formatted in EXT4 format for already more then a year!!
TimeMachine worked like a charm without any probs.

Disk nr 5 has a Disk Read/Write error (the LED on the diskunit is red!!) , so maybe that is causing this problem maybe?
I removed this disk, and still the same.

Should I rebuild the RAID array maybe??
Question: The RAID array will be automatically rebuild when I shove in a new HD in slot # 5.
Unfortunately the spare drive is still in backorder, so I have to find a way to manually start the RAID array rebuild.
How do I manually start a RAID rebuild??

Any help is appreciated!

YESSS!!

I got it fixed !!

I just removed HD # 5. (the one that had a read/write error on it)
Put it in my Mac Pro.
deleted all the 5 partitions on it.
created one BIG partition.
Formatted the disk.
Checked on HD defects. (NO defects!!!!!! Strange)
Removed that BIG single partition (no partitions left, so QNAP will auto-create the necessary partitions after a QNAP reboot)
Put the HD back in it's good ol' slot #5.
Rebooted the QNAP.
Logged into the Web interface of the QNAP,

and... rebuilding the array:

And while it was rebuilding, I checked TimeMacine on my Macbook Pro 17":

Houston, we have a lift off!!!
TimeMachine backs up again to the QNAP and works like a charm!!

So.....
A Read/Write error on any of the HD's you a QNAP's array causes the Volume NOT to be recognized as formatted as EXT4 Journaled... and TimeMachine will simply refuse to run because of that diskerror...

Hmmm....
Learned a lot today!!

Not really. Suspect an issue caused by the disk errors (read, write) leading to a problem on the RAID .. probably the RAID became read-only?

It's not a good sign on the health of this disk - even if re-partitioned.

I'd suggest to carefully check the Kernel log on I/O errors, or consider to update to QTS 4, which is feeding these events into the system log.

Or maybe check the SMART status of this drive, set up some schedule scans if possible.
