How can I create a single share for /share/MD0_DATA ?

Post by Hansaplastique »

I'm using a QNAP 869 Pro, running QTS 4.0.7.
I have multiple shares in /share/MD0_DATA, as is common with all QNAP's.

For admin purposes, and because I'm getting a little tired of mounting individual shares on my Mac over and over again, I'd like to be able to make /share/MD0_DATA a share as well.
The idea, for admin's only, is that I'd have full access to all shares by simply mounting just that share on my Mac.
So the /share/MD0_DATA would "encapsulate" all other shares.

Does anyone know if this is possible? How to do it? Experiences with doing just that?
(I found only one related post, which was for WEBDAV)

Nice request/question... I would like that too....

When I browse my network I do see the name of my NAS and all it's folders. I would like to map that too a drive such that any new share will always show up automatically.

Basically a share is a 'drive' but it's be nice for the whole NAS to be a 'drive' with the shares 'directories'...

Actually, research a topic called Folder Aggregation, that might be what we want!

You might need Active Direcotry enabled not sure...

No time to play right now, if you get it to work, could you post back here?

Thanks basnap ...

I've tried Folder Aggregation, but I got the bad impression that it's static ... so when I change something, then I'd have to update it manually ... maybe I understood that wrong, so anyone who has experience with Folder Aggregation: feel free to correct.

It does however allow aggregation of folders of other servers as well ...

When it comes to ACL usage, things are becoming challenging when introducing a root share - how it's possible was explained certainly more than once. Say you limit the access to the root share (and it's folder like MD[n]_DATA, CACHDEV[n]_DATA, ...) can limit the accessibility of all normal shared folders, too.

Bad idea, and common cause of unexpected issues. Words of the wise?

Regards,
-Kurt.

Hi Kurt,

thanks for the reply - you're comment is exactly why I was worried about even trying this.

Unfortunately I couldn't find any posts explaining this in this forum, the only post I found was related to sharing it through WebDAV.
Maybe I have been searching with the wrong keywords,... do you know what keywords to use (so I can search myself) or any links to posts you're referring to?

The way I do it and what works for me and might not work for everyone is that I created a new share, lets call it Allshares. I then created links to the folders of all the other shares under Allshares. So now from Allshares I can access the other folders.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

How? Crete a shared folder, and edit /etc/conf/smb.conf to adjust to the the place of the shared folder - but again, you had been warned.

Thanks for the warning ... I'll stay clear of this kind of share ... :-)

Would have been an a nice feature though.

Thanks Don - I'll give that a try ... seems to be the "safer" method :-)
What kind of links do you make? Symbolic links? (Sorry - not very used to making links)

Yes, symbolic links using the command line via SSH.

Nico to read that i am not the only one to use this trick.
However i linked AllShares to /*0_DATA.

This share is hidden and actually not shared at all.
This is the directory i use in the rscyn backup_manager to backup everyting in one pass.
Worked from 2012 on.

Clear article on Tweaking4All.

Thanks Armand, and thanks for the additional info.
I would not have been able to make the writeup without help from folks in this forum :-)
