High HDD temperature on TS-453Bmini vs TS-453A

Hi,

Bought my first(and second) QNAP last month, a TS-453A and after some reading I asked Amazon to return it and bought a TS-453Bmini.

I moved the disks to the new system and imediatly noticed a ~10º temperature difference
I have a raid1 with 2x WD 4TB REDs and a single WD 3TB RED

After warming up for 30 mins and mostly idle, both systems read:

HDD1 Temperature: 35 C/95 F
HDD2 Temperature: 34 C/93 F

System FAN1 Speed: 562 RPM

System: TS-453Bmini
Firmware: 4.3.3 Build 20170503
System Temperature: 36 C/97 F
CPU Temperature: 47 C/116 F
HDD1 Temperature: 42 C/107 F
HDD2 Temperature: 40 C/104 F
HDD3 Temperature: -- C/-- F
HDD4 Temperature: 40 C/104 F
System FAN1 Speed: 519 RPM

Both systems were installed on the same place, same ambient temperature and same HDDs.

I was considering upgrading to the 453B and looked at the manual but I see the drive trays are also in plastic which I suspect is the problem as there is no heat exchange from the HDDs->trays->chassis

I've seen HDD1 reach 47º so I'm concerned about the future health of my HDDs and am considering returning the NAS to Amazon.

Anyone here with experience on the 453B line?

Perhaps you could order replacement metal drive trays, they are available, even just one to try with the HDD that is causing you concern as an experiment.

Be careful with trying to return it again to Amazon, technically there is nothing wrong with the hardware so they may not exchange it (I do not know what Amazon's exchange / replacement policy is)

Anyways, all other HDDs are usually just 1º cooler then HDD1 (the one next to the board) so this is a "global" issue.

Amazon let's you return items purchased in the last 30 days, no questions asked.

I tried playing with Smartfan settings (the TS-453Bmini has more options) and without putting the fan at high speed there was no option with visible difference on the HDDs temperature.

What's the point? The TS-453Bmini has a complete different enclosure design, with a much lower forced air flow over the storage blocks than the NAS with the big open front trays. Typical NAS and business class HDD can be operated reliably in environment temperatures between 5°C to 60°C.
