New Hard Drive? WD red or Seagate Ironwolf?

Hello,

I currently have 4 x 1TB WD Red drives in raid 5 config that is going on 5 years with no hiccups. I'm updating my nas to the New TVS-473 and thought I would update the drives as well. I'm torn between the new Seagate ironwolf drives and the WD red's Has anyone have any experience with the Seagate 2td Drive?

Both are NAS approved, so I would go with the drive that has the best price to performance (warranty) ratio.

need to specify 4tb, 6tb, 8tb or 10tb models. I only recommend 4tb and upwards

personally i'm not gonna touch seagate until they rebuild their reputation or until they send me some hdds to test out beforehand

I like hgst a lot. wd after acquiring hgst is also now also a decent choice.

I rather get hgst deskstar nas over wd red. wd red pro may be slightly better with also a longer warranty than the deskstar, but also cost bit more as well.

WD announced its release of a new series of Gold 8 TB enterprise HDDs, but the real news is that WD is integrating key technologies from the HGST HDD product stack into its own enterprise portfolio. HGST and WD received approval from the MOFCOM Chinese regulatory agency last year to share technology, but the blessing contained a "hold separate" stipulation that requires the two companies to maintain separate product lines and sales teams for two years.

The limited information we have on the 8 TB Gold Enterprise HDDs indicates that it is nearly a carbon copy of the HGST Ultrastar He8 Series we recently tested. We asked WD for comment, and it indicated that it is employing technologies across both brands, which includes, but is not limited to, mechanical components, electronics and firmware. This slots in perfectly with the MOFCOM requirements.

I've had HGST 2TB, WD Red 4TB and 5TB, and now two Seagate Ironwolf 6TB.

The Ironwolf drives give run fairly cool when idle, but once they are in sustained read/write they run much hotter than the WD red

With the WD Red 4TB and 5TB in my NAS the HD temperature hovers around 33C. With the Ironwolf, idle is slightly lower, but with sustained read/write the temperature easily bcomes 49C.

The HGST 2TB and the WD red 4TB have done many hours of good service in may NAS. However Backblaze reported failure rates for WD Red that are not that good, which is why I switched to the Ironwolf.

Thanks for the info guys. I was looking at the ironwolf 2tb drive and noticed they are a little bit faster spindle speed at 5900 RPM compared to the Wd red. I also reviewed on one forum that they did have a higher transfer rate and almost compared to the WD Red Pro drive? Can anyone confirm this?

Here is the spec sheet for the Seagate IronWolf drives. the Max sustained transfer rate lists at 180 Mb/s. There is more detailed info about this in the product manual here.

Here is our IronWolf Pro series spec sheet, these drives are 7200 rpm speed and their max sustained transfer rate lists at 195 Mb/s for the 2TB model and 214 Mb/s for all larger sizes. There is more in-depth info in the product manual here.

That shows itself with the drive weight. An 8TB IronWolf weighs 780g while a 10TB one, with more platters, weighs 650g. But back to the Ironwolf Pro, which is available in 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10TB variants, with the 10TB job being helium-filled judging by its weight (650g) versus the 8TB product (780g again).

Like the IronWolf it spins at 7,200rpm, being a nearline drive, and a 6Gbps SATA interface, but it has a five-year warranty instead of the Ironwolf's three-year one, and can cope with a 300TB per year workload. The ordinary Ironwolf can handle 180TB per year. Another difference is the Ironwolf's 1 million hours MTBF rating versus the Pro's 1.2 million hours.

The new drives comes with two years of Seagate's data recovery rescue services and can cope with being slotted into 1 to 16-bay NAS enclosures, whereas the ordinary Ironwolf is rated for 1 to 8-bay boxes.

i spotted a user using barracuda pro in nas, is that recommended for this model

got myself a TS-431P together with 3x Seagate 8 TB Barracuda Pro ST8000DM005 harddiscs in Raid 5. I updated the firmware to the latest available one, created a 12 TB Volume (Thick Multiple Volume) on the 16 TB storage space and enabled encryption.

Nice info - I'm going through this decision at moment.

Scored a TS431 off a mate for 100, just need drives, And theres some great prices around at the moment on 3TB or 4TB's which is my limit on the 431 for Raid 5.

if it's your first my first tip is.... QNAP by itself is not a backup.

Either NAS + NAS (for most of us this usually happens when we update our nas to a newer model so old gets relegated as backup)

or NAS + cloud backup *crashplan is popular since it's cheap 5$monthly and unlimited storage.


Other than that you now got networked big storage

Very noisy drives - can be heard from the neighbor room.
They run a full 6 degrees warmer than my WD Red in idle and know the TS251 warns of too warm drives (S.M.A.R.T). Fan is running constantly .. Room is only 17 degrees where NAS is stored-

Will I spend 700$ for Seagate drives? - never again!!
