QNAP TS-453 Pro stuck on "SYSTEM BOOTING"

Post by alias71 »

It is one hour that my QNAP TS-453 Pro is stuck on "SYSTEM BOOTING" (from the display on the NAS)
I connected an HDMI monitor and I see the following lines:

0 early console in decompress_kernel
Decompressing linux... Parsining ELF... done.
Booting the kernel.

The STATUS led is green and the LAN led is blinking orange.
The two hard drives leds are green.

What should I do?

Thanks!

I am trying to find the firmware recovery guide for the TS-453 Pro here: https://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Firmware_Recovery but this specific model is not listed in the list of models the guide applies to.

Unless the NAS does not boot to become discoverable by Qfinder the Firmware Recovery is not required.

I suggest you look again

TS-x53 series is the model you need to look for.

OK, Thanks. I was looking for something like TS-x53 PRO considering that other entries in that page have PRO, U or other letters specified.
Anyway I powered off the NAS pressing the power button for 5 secs, removed the hard disks and powered it again. This time the NAS booted without any problem.
I connected to its Web UI and saw this message:

Hard Drive Missing
Install and format at least one hard drive before using the NAS. A hard drive can be inserted to an empty disk bay without turning off the NAS. For the hard disk compatibility list, please visit https://www.qnap.com/compatibility/
Note: All the drive data will be cleared upon hard drive initialization.
Please make sure the disk(s) are installed correctly.

I do not want to lose the data in my two disks (raid-1).
BTW, I noticed from the NAS display that the firmware version is 4.3.3 (20170606)

What should I do next?

Thanks!

This is now three times that it happens and I am able consistently to fix the problem doing this:
1 - Force power off the NAS pressing the power button for 10 secs
2 - Remove the hard drives (remembering the order)
3 - Power on the NAS
4 - This time, without hard drives, the NAS starts. Interestingly, no error is logged.
5 - Power off the NAS normally
6 - Reinsert the hard drives preserving the order
7 - Power on the NAS
8 - The NAS starts and all the data is accessible.

If I skip #2 (Remove the hard drives) the problem is not fixed.
Is anyone able to explain this behavior?

Thanks!

I have two 4TB WD Red hard drives in RAID 1 configuration. This is exactly what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EHBERSE

Thanks!

Nothing wrong with your setup.

Did you already try a 3 second reset when all drives are in the nas?

I got courage, I backed up everything on an USB hard disk, performed a factory reset, did not install any app (I just need the basic NAS functionality), and finally copied the data back to the NAS.
Everything looking good for now. I shutdown and powered on the NAS three times without issues. If it happens again I will open a ticket.
Thanks for all the help!!!

Thanks, this worked from my 453 Pro.

In the first phase it consumed a DHCP address and was accessible on the web, in the 2nd phase it was back to static IP.
The 2nd boot took a considerable amount of time to complete.

(I had power outage, which likely caused the stall to begin with. A switch died at the same time)

Same issue here with TS-453A.
Update => restart => nothing !!
Power off by pressing the button => restart => stuck on system booting.
Power off by pressing the button => removed the disk => restart => stuck on system booting.
Power off by pressing the button => UNPLUG the nas for 5mn => restart => restarted ok. (no disk plugged)
I powered it off on the initialization/installation home screen (nas changed IP in between since it went back to initial startup status)
Now I'm going to plug the disk back again and see what happens. Will report back.
After seeing so many posts on google for this kind of issue I'm not updating the thing ever again.
I've had a synology DS713+ for 5 years and never had an issue like this. I only switched to qnap for hardware encryption.
and the not-so-funny thing is I have a remote 2 bay qnap nas I tried for backup which is behaving the same way after the same update. (January 2 something)
