thanks for the info. I went back on the QNAP site, and found it. They usually show a picture of the main unit with the expanders, but not this time.
So I was lazy, and did not read the doc carefully enough.
While I am very anxious to see the TS-1277, my applications always need a 10G card and the 12G SAS expander card. I am not seeing a price difference between this
and the TVS-1282T or TS-1685 (which are the boxes I most commonly install). I fully understand that with QTS 4.3.4 you can put in a GPU card (like an AMD Radeon or NVidia GTX),
but you can certainly do this on a TS-1685 with the larger power supply (550 Watt). So I am still questioning the advantage of the Ryzen vs. the Intel and why I would buy this box
instead of the 1282 or 1685.

Bob Zelin
Hi Bob,

Totally understand the point you are making.. I was also looking at the tvs-1282 i7 and the 1685 6 core model, but decided to wait on purchasing the 1277.. The 1277 also comes with a 550 watt power supply but you would have to add a 10gb card, but on the other hand you get an additional 2 cores with a higher clock frequency over the top end option of the 1685 which has 6 core @ 2.2ghz.. It all depends on your needs and what you will be using the boxes for I guess...

intel has thunderbolt and igpu for quicksync hardware acceleration (e.g. plex transcoding). ryzen has more cores otherwise :X
TVS-1282T-i5-16G: Intel® Core™ i5-6500 3.2 GHz quad-core processor
TVS-1282T-i7-32G: Intel® Core™ i7-6700 3.4 GHz quad-core processor
TS-1277-1600-8G
CPU Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 5 1600 6-core/12-thread 3.2 GHz processor, Turbo Core 3.6 GHz

TS-1277-1700-16G
CPU Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 7 1700 8-core/16-thread 3.0 GHz processor, Turbo Core 3.7 GHz
basically the intel is 8 threads. the 1700 is 16 threads !!

also remember if nvidia hardware acceleration works then NVENC > quicksync in terms of quality. or even without hardware acceleration X264 software is best quality. and either platform has sufficient cpu for it.

Hi Bob,

I will throw my thoughts in on this one.

TS-1277 vs TVS-1282:
- TS-1277 has ~30% CPU performance lead (overall) vs. i7 TVS-1282 - http://bit.ly/2AMQbQr
- TS-1277 comes standard with 550w Power Supply (I believe the PS upgrade on TVS-1282 is only 450w)
- TS-1277 has support for upcoming vQTS (may be a benefit to your users), not initially supported on TVS-1282, but maybe at a later date

- TVS-1282 has option for T3/10GbE model, TS-1277 doesn't.
- TVS-1282 has embedded GPU/HDMI output, TS-1277 supports that via GPU addition

TS-1277 vs TS-1685:
- TS-1277 has roughly a 40%+ CPU performance lead (overall) vs. D1531 - TS1685 - http://bit.ly/2AMQbQr
- TS-1277 comes standard with 550w Power Supply, TS1685 will depend on the CPU/Model
- TS-1277 has support for upcoming vQTS (may be a benefit to your users), not initially supported on TS-1685, but maybe at a later date

- TS-1685 has larger storage capability in chassis (12 vs. 8 3.5")
- TS-1685 support (6) m.2 SATA in box, vs. (2)
- TS-1685 supports up to 128GB vs. 64GB
- TS-1685 comes with 10GbE out of the box.

I personally see the TS-1277 more as a competitor to the TVS-1282, but some crossover to the 1685.
For the users who want the most CPU performance out of their box for VM usage/etc, the Ryzen box wins. For the users who wants the most expansion long term, and biggest SINGLE box config, then the TS-1685 wins.

Perfectly said.. I did not have time to give a more elaborate answer, but maybe I should have, because now I feel like a dope.. :DD

I have a question about upgrading the Power Supply in the new TS-877...

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new Qnap Ryzen based solution. (The Shopping Cart is fully populated!) :-D
...However, due to the anticipated location for the server, I'm trying to conserve space and stick with the TS-877 model rather than the TS-1277. With that said, we also intend to utilize it's GPU expandability, for various rendering and VM purposes. While the 8 bays provides more than enough storage expandibilty for our needs, I'm afraid the downgraded 450w power supply in the 877 versus the 550W in the 1277 is limiting our GPU options. (For instance, when utilizing the "compatibility tested & approved" Gigabyte 1070 Nvidia option, which is the current goal.)

The compatibility list for the TS-877 simply says: "GIGABYTY GV-N1070IXOC-8GD HD Station /Linux Station /Hardware Transcoding /Virtualization Station"; "Extra 550W power supply is required." (Ironically, this same Nvidia 1070 based GPU is not yet listed on the "compatibility list" for the TS-1277!) :-/

For our application and logistics, it would be worth it to us to simply upgrade the power supply immediately after receiving the unit, to the required 550W version power supply; in order to support the Nvidia 1070 GPU. So my question is, is this required 550W power supply for our GPU goals, a part number that is already available? Is there a compatible 3rd party power supply that can be utilized, or does the case require some type of proprietary form factor? ...what are the specs?

The closest thing I've found thus far, is the Power Supply Model:PWR-PSU-550W-FS01 Price: US$279.00, listed in the QNAP accessory store. But it doesn't appear to be the correct form factor, and it doesn't list compatibility for the TS-877. (Plus, it's price appears to be about $200, to high!) :-/

Any advice and direction to the correct part is much appreciated! Thank you!

not sure what PSU is compatible, but for my desktop i'm getting a replacement Seasonic Focus gold plus series (mines the 750 watt version). Johnyguru and hardocp rated the series quite well
Summary

I don't know what more I can say about this unit that hasn't already been said. This unit was so far inside the mythic bracket for voltage regulation that I don't think anything else I can say could fully do it justice. The same goes for the unspeakably good ripple suppression on the minor rails. If this thing even has a drawback at all, it would be the 12V rail ripple suppression, which was merely holding the line for excellent results. Heck, even that only really looks bad to you if you compare it to the minor rails. The bottom line is, this is perhaps the best performing 550W unit I've seen thus far. You've got to be out of your mind if you don't want one right now.

The Good:

beyond mythic voltage stability
excellent ripple control
excellent build quality
ten year warranty
fully modular
switchable semi-fanless mode

The Bad:

not one dadgum thing

The Mediocre:

in cable capacitors

maybe you can try contacting qnap sales support and inquiring about this technical matter. maybe they can shed more light on what would be compatible if a ts-1277 is not an option due to the size.

I would be careful on the the compatibility list as those are generally "conservative" recommendations. Also different brand/models are going to have different power needs. See here to see how much difference there can be: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvi ... 585-7.html

I wouldn't go with any Gaming/OC versions of cards as you won't be able to access the settings in NON-VM usage, and to be honest I don't know if they would work in VM usage even.
