[quote="Moogle Stiltzkin"]my ts-877 just arrived. i did not noticed this quality issue (which seems awfully generalized without pointing a specific issue which makes me wonder how credible this complaint is to begin with :S other than out of stock due to demand  )

might be true i don't know, but in my case i did not find find any issues so far.

what exactly is it not able to perform?

i just installed a MSI GeForce GTX 1050 AERO ITX 2G graphics card then tested it out on virtual station win10 64bit, it worked.

Hi, Do you think the following graphic card work on the TS-1277 ?

http://www.gigabyte.us/Graphics-Card/GV-N1080IX-8GD#kf

Also since you already installed a graphics card have you tried using that to transcode in plex?

AMAZON HAS STOPPED SELLING THE TS-877 - Claiming "quality control issues"!

Other possibility is that people see 877 and assume 8 3.5” drive bays versus 6 + 2 2.5” bays.

Also I don’t believe anyone here made any comments disparaging your abilities or technical knowledge, we simply said if Amazon was saying vague “quality” issues were causing returns it is very possible the issues were more user related than actual HW related.

I provided alternatives to solve your issue of not having a NAS.

I guess only you can decide how long you want to have a significant investment in parts doing nothing for you vs the cost delta of purchasing the NAS through other channels/suppliers.

Also if you look at the pass mark ratings for the chip, while you do end up with more cores on the 1700, they do run slower and the uplift from the 1600 isn’t as significant as some might assume.

I was about to type the same thing ... tech issues reported are user faults/lack of understanding ... you don't even have your NAS yet..so how can you think that comment is about you?

Got My Qnap TS-1277-1700-16g from Amazon last week, no issues at all... FWIW :DD Nobody else had any stock, and as soon as amazon got a few units in they were gone.. I was so happy when I was able to grab one, it even came triple boxed, very cool... 8)

check out my review here (for the ts-877)

i added a picture showing the dimensions that would fit for the 3 models different models, 677, 877, and 1277. so you should FIRST check the graphics card your getting whether the it is WITHIN the allowed dimensions to be able to fit.

on your GeForce GTX 1080 Mini ITX 8G product page it says
H=37 L=169 W=131 mm
as for transcoding i tested with both plex and emby. i did the live transcoding so the media is playing while it's being transcoded.

it played smoothly, though for plex rather than use hurt cpu, i lowered it to the next lower setting for the most smoothest playback with lesser preloading with a more balance between quality and playback experience.

media i tested were x264, x265 1080p high bit rate, MKV with SSA subtitles. i watch a lot of japanese anime, so the subtitles came out right. Except for one anime on Emby, but that is mostly Emby's fault because the app is still in beta atm.

My unit is the Ryzen 1600 version

What are you using the graphics card for? Is it for video transcoding?? I think I remember a video by linus tech tips where he was reviewing some video cards, and it was interesting, even to him, that there was a negligible difference in transcoding speed between the 1050, to the 1060, 1070, and 1080. He said if you're just getting it for transcoding, you can just buy the 1050 because the higher models offer no benefit in hardware transcode.

the video engine is most of the time a special section of the chip die, that does not change across one generation(no matter if low or high end model) .. so the only thing that could be a factor is GPU and RAM clock

As Moogle said, QNAP has published the PCI card specs so that would be your starting point. As for Plex transcoding, currently Plex only supports Intel QSV transcoding. Some have achieved GPU transcoding I believe for Nvidia cars in windows, so you MIGHT be about to do that via GPU passthrough on a Windows VM. I personally haven't gotten around to testing that yet to see if it works or not, but PlexPass is required for HW transcoding so if you don't have PlexPass it is a moot point.

That being said, the Ryzen chip in the 1277 is more than powerful enough to handle the SW transcoding of multiple 1080 streams (in most cases) and even 4k (although it is working hard on that one) as Nvidia recommends a passmark of 8000+ for 4k transcoding and Ryzens are 11,xxx = 13,xxx depending on chip.

Plex MAY add support in the future for NVIdia HW Transcoding, but not guaranteed at this point.

They do change number of Cuda cores, clock speed, video memory, etc. between cards which will have an effect in some use cases. See here for all 10 Series cards side by side: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/pr ... s/compare/

afaik, the video section of the GPU is separate from the cores, etc

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_PureVideo

it's pretty much the same for each generation

all these cards have the same video SIP core (VP8/feature set H)
GeForce GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1080
GeForce GTX 1060
NVIDIA TITAN Xp, TITAN X, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
GeForce GTX 1050, GTX 1050 Ti
GeForce GT 1030, MX150

There are some minor differences on the top-end cards (GP104) vs. the GP106/GP107 on HW encode/decode support.

What is video mode selected for pass-through to VMs? I get VGA, VMVGA, Cirrus and QXL and not sure which one to choose.

After you assign the gpu to the VM, video mode should be grayed out if I remember right. Also for the x77 make sure you have GPU mapped to VS. you then need to do the setup/install of the video drivers off your GPUs HDMI output and direct connect keyboard/mouse.

See this tutorial. https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/tutorial ... on-station

Yeah I saw that tutorial but on Virtualization Station 3, I don't see a Device Manager option. That guide is based of the old version.

Edit: Card is a RX 580 which the NAS detects fine.
