TVS-673 1 stream cpu at 80%

Post by aarbee »

I have a TVS-473. And when I look at the specs, considering the CPU, I read that it could do 2 transcodings simultanious.
I was playing a movie last week and decided to check things on the 673.
To my astonischment was the CPU at 80-90%. Where normal with 1 virtual machine loaded is 3-10%.
When I looked what plex was doing, it appeared to transcode, sound. From AAC3 to AAC.
I tried another movie. And that one was direct playing. Also putting the CPU at 80%.

I used a Nvidia Shield, only for playback. The Plex server was installed on the Qnap.
Everyting is connected via 1 GB Cat 5/5e cables.

Now I wonder, what part of transcoding or directplay I did not understaand.

Thanks ahead.
Friendly Greetings,

RobB

Hello Trex,

4.3.4.0435 is the version.
I think, that is the latest version.

Plex version: Version 1.5.5.3634
And that is not the latest version, as I do not prefer Spyware on my servers.

Just a thought. Could it be that I also installed Media Streaming add-on and Video Station?
I did experiment with that too, in order to see what the diference would be. But when every movie had no sound at all, except a very loud ticking or beeping sound, I did quit it.
Besides the transcoding movie also had that loud ticking and no sound, when I did put the sound on passthrough on the Shield.

No those shouldn't have an impact. I have CodexPack installed, but that shouldn't make any difference as I don't believe Plex uses it.

Plex version might be involved as they do make changes on things related to transcoding periodically in different versions, so that could be part of it.

Do you have your Nvidia Shield TV connected to an AV receiver? If you do, then it is likely a configuration issue on the Plex Client on the Shield TV. Plex I believe defaults to 2.0 audio, and you need to change that to 5.1/etc. That will change your transcoding from ac3 (5.1) to aac (2.0) to direct play.

No the HDMI is directly coupled to the TV.
So changing something in the settings of the Shield? Will try that. Thanks.

Why did you change from the 673 to the 877?
Satisfied?

Yeah I was satisfied, but doing a lot of AI/ML at work so wanted something beefier to setup a home lab.

That was not the solution.
If I do the passtrough on "OFF", the sound is not disturbed.
CPU is by times 80+ % high and drops than to 10%.

Here is what I have mine set for on the ShieldTV: Passthrough = Auto.

Beyond that, I would probably recommend opening new forum item over in the Plex QNAP sub-forum http://forums.plex.tv/categories/qnap where ChuckPA and others can look at some of your log data. Your CPU usage will vary based on how the media is encoded, but they are going to be able to tell you more there from that data.

According to my discussion started at plex-forums: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/30472 ... -80#latest
I conclude that the many talked over 2000 passmark for a 1080P movie is not completely correct.
This is how I understood it:
If the bitstream of a 1080P is 10 mb/sec, than the Passmark should be around 2000.
However if your movy is a 20 mb/sec, than the Passmark should be around 4000.

In short per 10 mbit stream, you need 2000 passmark.
Considering that the cpu in the x73 is around 4700 passmark, and the system default is between 5 and 10%, I count 10%.
So 70% rest. Which is equal 3200mbits.
So just not at 20mbps.
When it was transcoding I saw a bitrate of 17000.
Which comes around that 80%.

So now I have the reasoning behind it. Also knowing now, that those multi xeon server guys are not provision a complete city. But only their family.
This makes me wonder if the 673 was a good choice. In case I would like to have a system capable of 2 maybe 3 transcoding streams and 2 virtual machines (hardly used.)

RobB
