Question about x77 and m2 and video cards

Post by bapw@comcast.net »

After careful reading is it true there is no way to have a Gen 3 x 4 card and a video card since that both need slot 1. Need to rethink everything!!!

the original QM2 cards were too big for the gen3X4 slot on the 77 series. But the new QM2 cards that only take 2 M.2 will fit. You could use the QM2-2P-344

The chart I saw that described the new cards only had the 77 listed under the 3 x 8 but the 1277 and the 677 list the 3 x 4 with both 2 and 4 cards but the 1677 does not so does the 3 x 4 cards not work on the 1677 of have they just not updated the compatibility talk about making things confusing. They do not list any of the new cards under the 1677. I am interested in the 4 3 x4 card since if end up getting the machine the 8 slot is for the video.

are you asking about the 4P version? because I don't think the QM2-4P-342 would fit in the smaller slot on the 77 series. 4P version has to be larger since it holds 4 M.2 cards instead of 2. But the QM2-2P-344 should fit. I think it should also work in the 1677X and I think that list just has not been updated yet, but I am going to verify that. And when I get verification, I think they will also update the website so that the higher end QM2 cards will appear on the compatibility list.

This is listed on the same page as the cards "The TS-x77 and TVS-x82(T) series only supports installing the QM2 in the System Zone PCIe slot (PCIe slot 1)." The QM2-4P-342 is listed as compatible with the 1277 but the slides they put out do not list the 77 under the card.

The limitations are pure mechanical - the (older) longer QM2 and the new QM2 for four SSDs simply don't fit - there is not enough space for the installation.

The compatibility list for the TS-1677X has been updated to include the QM2-2P-344 and most of the other QM2 cards.

According to the Qnap accessories store QM2-4P-384 which is the 3 x 8 card for 4 has been discontinued. So I guess to get 4 m2s you have to buy the 3 x 4 card stick it in the 1 slot and forget about getting a video card or forget 4 m2s running at 3rd generation speed settle for 2. I do not feel like settling and I wont!!!!!

To clarify I know if you used a 3 x 8 card it would go I slot 1 and no video card. I just find it strange that they want you to buy a 3 x4 4P card since according to them only work in slot 1 and stick that in the 3 x 8 slot. I was told that the 3 x 8 card is still coming but if something is still coming don't say discontinued.

I see that it says discontinued on the accessories store. This should be fixed soon. This product just came out and was probably not quite available when it was added to the store. And it looks to me like someone wrote the wrong reason for it not yet being available.

The QNAP USA warehouse just got stock on the QM2-4P-384 so I think we can conclude that this product is not discontinued. Soon this should be listed as available in the accessories store.

It's not about the PCI slot specs - neither any QM2-4x-nnn nor the original QM2-2P, QM2-2S, QM2-2P10G1T and QM2-2S10G1T can mechanically fit in any other slot, the cards are physically to long.

Only the shorter QM2-2S-220A, QM2-2P-244A, QM2-2P-344 and the QM2-2P-384 mechanically fit (where the last one can be installed because of the PCIe slots are "open" design allowing to take cards with longer plugs, it will run as 3.0 x4).

To conclude - 4P and GPU expansion can't be combined, only 2S/2P (new shorter QM2 card design) and GPU can be combined.

I understand. It would be helpful if in the future they would put a note or a drop down list or something on the compatibility page either by slot or next to the card name in the drop down list so that it is there too. I would have the information in as many places as possible. Such as QM2-4P-342 slot 1 only.

You are right that this note should be there. A request has been made to QNAP headquarters to add this note to the compatibility list. I expect the note will be there soon.

TVS-471 and QM2-2P-244A

Post by MarkInEugene »

This NAS has two free PCIe slots: Gen 2 x 4 (Black) and Gen 3 x 8 (White).
I have a 10Gb NIC in the Gen 3 x 8 slot.
I just bought the QM2-2P-244A Gen 2 x 4 card, but it won't work in the Gen 2 x 4 PCIe slot?
When powered on, the NAS displays SYSTEM "BOOTING >>>>>>>>>>>>" indefinately until I unplug it?

I would suggest opening a helpdesk request re: booting.
