USB 3.0

I can't get any of the USB 3.0 ports on my NAS (TS-877) to pass through to a Windows 10 VM. I can connect the device in VS, but nothing shows in the guest OS.

Any thoughts? Was there a windows driver I had to install?

In your VM settings, you should have a USB option (right below GPU). As long as your USB is detected, then you can pass that through to your VM.

Did you install the Guest Tools in your VM? Check in the Win10 Device Manager to see if you are seeing the device there.

The USB device will show in VS if it's connected to the QNAP, and I can check the box to assign it to the VM. However, anything plugged into a USB 3.0 port (I've tried 2 different USB hard drives, plus a USB mouse and USB keyboard that work fine when attached to the USB 2.0 ports) don't show up for the Guest OS (e.g., they don't show up in Win10 "System Information" in Administrative Tools in Control Panel).

The aforementioned USB mouse and USB keyboard work just fine when attached to the USB 2.0 ports... I use them all the time. Just anything plugged into the physical USB 3.0 ports do not work.

Which USB port are you using (Front or one of the back one)? Have you tried a different USB port on the Qnap?

You could try hanging a USB 2.x hub off the USB 3.x port and plug them into that as well to see if that makes any difference.

I've tried all of the standard troubleshooting (e.g., trying each USB 3.0 port and the USB 3.1 port for good measure). I hadn't thought of the hub idea but I will when I get back to the NAS later today...

It's especially frustrating, given that USB 3.0 guest OS support is kind of a make-or-break feature for one of my key NAS use cases...

In looking back at a past helpdesk ticket I had opened, I found my notes that basically referenced that VS doesn't actually support USB 3.x passthrough. Within the VM, it shows up as a USB 2.x device.

Now this was for a prior version of VS, but I don't believe they have updated the KVM/QEMU base components since I had submitted that ticket.

According to QNAP's documentation they now support USB 3.0; it's also in the VM settings in VS (it's a toggle on the USB settings screen).

But, PROBLEM SOLVED
This was one of those classic "reboot it and fix it" issues. First, I downgraded VM support to USB 2.0 (in the VS settings for the VM). Then I booted the VM. Then, I shut down the VM. Then, I went back to the settings and re-enabled USB 3.0 support. Which magically caused it to start working.

SO, for anybody else who has this problem -- try disabling and then re-enabling USB 3.0 support.
