Plex and Qnap and VPN

Post by spikemixture »

I have an ISP static IP.
An Asus RT-AC88U router
A TVS-1282
Plex server on the NAS.
And PIA VPN account.

I have the VPN setup and works on the Qnap and the Router (currently NAS VPN is running but not set to "Use VPN as NAS Default Gateway)( router vpn disconnected)
PMS currently streams remotely but not when either the router or the NAS has VPN turned on.

Suggestions please
Qnap TS-1277 1700 (48gb RAM) 8x10TB WD White,- Raid5, 2x M.2 Crucial 1TB (Raid 1 VM),
2x SSD 860 EVO 500gb (Raid1 QTS), 2x SSD 860 EVO 250GB (Cache), 2x M.2 PCIe 970 500gb NVME (Raid1 Plex and Emby server)
GTX 1050 TI
Qnap TVS-1282 i7 (32GB RAM) 6x8TB WD White - JBOD, 2x M.2 Crucial 500gb (Raid1 VM),
2x SSD EVO 500gb (Raid1 QTS), 2x SSD EVO 250gb (Raid1 Cache), 2x M.2 PCIe Intel 512GB NVME (Raid1-Servers)
Synology -1817+ - DOA
Drobo 5n - 5x4TB Seagate, - Drobo Raid = 15TB
ProBox 8 Bay USB3 - 49TB mixed drives - JBOD
All software is updated asap.
I give my opinion from my experience i.e. I have (or had) that piece of equipment/software and used it!

I purchased a LenovoM73 (core i5 4570T) to run Plex, it works great for 2 CPU transcoded 1080p streams and only uses 14watts at idle.

I mention this because that's the simplest solution. Run Plex on a separate PC using shares mounted on the PC from your NAS with no VPN on the plex server. Then run VPN on your NAS like normal.

You might be able to use a Virtual machine to run plex on a separate LAN port and routed using virtual switch, but i'm not sure how the performance would be. Someone else would have to chime in here.

Yep I get that and can do that (I have a NUC i7 that was my server). But I bought this big motha to do everything.

Thanks will try that.

I will ask another question in a new post about tunneling as it might be missed here....

vpn server on the asus is to connect from external

phone ...tablet....etc while outside your network

connecting the nas vpnclient to your asus server (while both are in the same network), makes no sense

The idea of using a VPN is to tunnel into your home network, essentially so your computer thinks it's on your home network. Once tunneled in, the experience should be the same as if you were at home, albeit at reduced bandwidth. That ovpn file is supposed to be used on your computer, you shouldn't have to touch your NAS at all.

I have set PIA as a vpn client on the Asus.

It works but plex disconnects !!

I would use merlin firmware (on the asus) and selective routing

run your p2p program in a container or vm ,that route all traffic from that vm through a pia vpn tunnel established by the router (with killswitch on tunnel fail)

Do all the devices on your network need VPN??

If you only need your NAS to have anonymity, then I would just use the VPN client on the NAS and leave the router's internet alone. Using VPN from your PC into your router should work at that point.

selective routing (as the name implies) is vpn for selected network clients only ...works great

and in contrast to qnap (afaik) supports a killswitch .. so if the tunnel fails, you dont start p2p on your plain ip, exposing yourself to authorities

I cannot get me head around VPN clients and servers. :?
My NAS and my Router have both.

Currently I have PIA setup as a "client" on the NAS.

It says it's connected!

I then have an option to "Use VPN as NAS Default Gateway" on or off
What does that do? or what is the benefit?
If that is clicked ON I then have this option
"Allow other networks devices in the same subnet to connect to the VPN through the NAS" ticked or not.
If i do Plex will not work remotely!

When is the server used ?
And when is the client used?

Does the merlin firmware do "Mesh"

I have 2 Ausus routers "meshed" together
