TS-420 2 Seagate HDD's suddenly missing in RAID 5 now inactive

Post by khdexter »

Hi, Ive never really had an issue with the TS420 until now, seems to have some gremlins going on. If someone knows why this happened it would be much appreciated
TS-420
4.3.3.0663 build 2018082
2xWDRed 2tb
2xSeagate 2tb ST000VN000

RAID 5 suddenly became inactive and the two seagate drives are showing as do not exist in SMART and the capacity now shows that of a 4tb drive for each of them, green lights still on the drives.
did have the power out for the day and have completed the firmware upgrade, wondering if the upgrade has had an impact as well

No access to any data

So drive 3 dropped out 12 days ago. Anything in the log about drive 2?

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Well had to go back a bit but what do you know this happened in June

Type Date Time Users Source IP Computer name Content
Warning 2018/06/12 16:42:27 System 127.0.0.1 localhost [RAID5 Disk Volume: Drive 1 2 3 4] RAID device in degraded mode.
Information 2018/06/12 16:42:27 System 127.0.0.1 localhost [RAID5 Disk Volume: Drive 1 2 3 4] Drive 2 removed.
Error 2018/06/12 16:42:16 System 127.0.0.1 localhost Drive 2 unplugged.

I was given no warning of this and why would a drive suddenly unplug???????????

Shouldnt i have had some other warning other than in a log?

So a drive failed in June and you did nothing about it. Then a drive fails in October and now your RAID 5 array is gone. RAID 5 will only survive a single drive failure. I hope you have recent backups as you will need to rebuild from scratch with new drives.

As dolbyman asked, did you not have alerts set up?

Have got some recent backups (six months ago) so not too concerned about that but did wonder why the light didn't turn red on either of the drives as they have in the past when there was an issue. I was sure there was an email alert set up but will look into that to double check, didn't do anything about it in June because i was not aware of the issue...maybe i just need to log in a bit more often

Damn it, the email alert wasn't on...is now but all too late...a trap for new players...still would like to know why the lights are still green on the drives and under volume management they come up as being 4tb instead of 2tb drives with ready status. Spose stranger things have happened. Thanks Don n' Dolbyman
