TR-004 Rear button
If I had a TR-004 configured as an expansion to my TS-853 and someone accidentally pushed the button on the back of the TR-004 for 5 seconds would I lose all the data on the TR-004? Because that seems like a very strange design choice - seems way too easy to accidentally lose a lot of data.

Re: TR-004 Rear button
I would open a helpdesk request with QNAP about it to be sure. From a quick scan of the documentation, I don't believe that is the case if TR-004 is configured under Software Control mode which it would be when used with the TS-853.

Re: TR-004 Rear button
I'm not saying it's very likely - but it's possible. Say, you have someones kids visiting, and when you're not looking they find the box and start pressing buttons. Or, maybe you're picking it up to move it - perhaps to clean underneath, and stupidly grab it with the button under your hand. Totally ridiculous examples - but, having a non-protected extremely easy way to destroy a lot of data just seems like a bad idea.
Search for "set button" in the user manual - looks dangerous to me, and that manual actually specifies "3 seconds" (which I'd say increases the likelihood of accidents).

Re: TR-004 Rear button
So, if it's in the other mode (being used as a DAS connected to a PC for example) then total data loss is a simple 3 second push of a button away?

Ask QNAP and report their answer back here.
Use the forum search feature before posting.
Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Re: TR-004 Rear button
I guess because that button is used to configure this device (unlike a reset button) they didn't do it recessed.
you just have to watch out when handling it ..and keep it out of childrens reach (locked ventilated cabinet?)

Re: TR-004 Rear button
If you were using it t more as a DAS (hooked to a PC) I believe that would be the case. Again since these are Brand New, the forum has limited experience with these right now.AdrianW wrote:So, if it's in the other mode (being used as a DAS connected to a PC for example) then total data loss is a simple 3 second push of a button away?

Re: TR-004 Rear button
The TR-004 User Guide says that changing the RAID mode requires first changing the Mode switch settings, and then holding down the set button.AdrianW wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 4:08 pm If I had a TR-004 configured as an expansion to my TS-853 and someone accidentally pushed the button on the back of the TR-004 for 5 seconds would I lose all the data on the TR-004? I assume that holding down the Set button without changing the switch will do nothing.
Ive also noticed from the TR-004 video on youtube that the Mode switches are recessed, so hopefully it should be difficult to accidentally delete data.

Re: TR-004 Rear button
If I purchase one of these I'll load up some data and see what happens with the button. I really hope accidentally losing data isn't as easy as it appears.

Hi,
Long-pressing the SET button does not delete the data on the TR-004 as long as you do not change the Mode switch.

Re: TR-004 Rear button
Well, that's good. Still seems a little too easy - but very unlikely to happen accidentally at least.
This may be too soon to ask - but will there be a TR-008 any time in the future?
