UPDATE: Decided on the TVS-951x (planning on getting a new TS-453Be)

Post by xavierh »

UPDATE:

I decided to get TVS-951x instead of the 453Be as it has more bays, comes already with 10Gbit interface (i would have to buy a separate card for that with the 453be). i dont need the latest hdmi spec as the NAS will not be connected to a TV or monitor but will serve files, services running on docker, plex server)

i will upgrade the 2gb that it comes with to 16gb and i plant o use some of the 2.5 bays for ssd catching...

the plan tonight would be to migrate all the drives on the existing TS-453A that i have to the new device.. once that is done and completed successfully i will "repurpose" the ts-453 to server as a VPN gateway so that certain apps and services running on the 951x can access the VPN tunnel created on the 453a

wish me luck

hello all

i am considering getting a new QNAP (TS-453be) together with the m2 pcie card and 4x4TB drives in raid 5. i currently have a TS453a that i plan to keep for runing VMs etc. My plan is to use the NAs for the following:
  • Plex Server (i can hw decode x265)
    Media Storage for Plex
    Docker Container
as i will also install the m2 compatible card with 2 250gb ssds for cachiing but i also would liek to know what other thinca i can do with the ssds and or if i need to setup the new nas in a special way (think vs thin) to make the setup future proof. i was planning to setup the volume in "thick" mode.

thanks in advance

unless the docker does lots of random IO, I doubt you would see any speed increase from SSD usage

for HW decode of x265 you need a plexpass .. but it seems the J3455 does do HEVC main 10 decode

yes i i am a plex pass user and based ont he NAS compatibility list https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... 1274624273 it does the hw decoding.

getting back to the SSD question, whouln't streaming benefit with caching as that is a sequential i/o operation?

If you are looking for Plex usage, you might want to look at the TVS-951x also.

Eliminates the need for PCIe card for SSDs (since 453Be is only PCIe 2.x anyway NVMe really doesn't help that much over SATA), and has even more advanced HW transcoding capabilities vs. 453Be.

I have the 951X (RAID6 with 5x4TB WD Red) and plex works fine up until 4k, but 4K transcoding stutters (I have no plex pass)

direct play Plex works fine (even 4k HDR)

I have 4 bays for SSD drives (Qtier, cache or volume) but currently see no use in it (if/when I get 10GbE an SSD volume would certainly be of use)

Consider looking at the TVS-472XT instead. By the time you populate the 453Be with the M.2 card, you're not far off from the 472XT. With the 472XT, you get a much more powerful CPU, 2x NVME, 10Gbe, USB 3.1, HDMI 2.0, thunderbolt 3, etc... Much better box for a few $ more.

I got the 2GB version as well and added 8GB (for a total of 10) .. might not be as good as a performance boost as full dualchannel but works just fine for what I use if for
