Move library to SSD drive.
I have an 8 bay NAS, in a raid 6 array.
Only bays 1-6 are used.
I just added an SSD drive to bay 8, as a second volume, in the hopes of being able to move Plex Media Server on to it - I understood it that it was possible to move the app to a second volume, and my hopes in doing so was that it would speed up the thumbnail loading.
I just uninstalled PMS and when I went to re-install it,I wasn't given the option to select the second volume as the install location.
Is it possible to install PMS in a different location other than the default?
If not, is it possible to have the thumbnails stored on the SSD drive, and the app on the main volume?
Thanks!
Inso.

Re: Move library to SSD drive.
If it doesn’t give you the option to install or move it after it is installed then you can’t move it unless you want to attemp to modify scripts and config files yourself.
What model NAS do you have?
Where is it slow loading?

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Re: Move library to SSD drive.
So I have the TS-853 pro.
It's slow loading the thumbnails. I know it's a vanity thing, but it looks much much better when the meta data and images / posters load instantly.
What about a sym link or something, would that work?

Re: Move library to SSD drive.
A symlink might work but also might get changed back on updates. What are you going to do when your single SSD fails? You will lose everything on there.
Slow where? On the TV? In a web browser? In an app?

Re: Move library to SSD drive.
The migration option will depend on if you are using the "app center" version of Plex or the newer Plex.TV manually downloaded & installed version of Plex. There currently is an issue though that if you have Migrated your app/library to SSD, over the top upgrades do not "honor" that migration (i.e. they go back to HDD) and won't copy your library back.
A better option is to SymLink the library directory to SSD, as when you do over the top version upgrades, that has been unaffected in my experience.
All that being said, agree with Don that I personally wouldn't do it on an SSD w/o some level of RAID resiliency/etc.

Re: Move library to SSD drive.
@trexx.... i am using the app centre version. I didn't actually realise you could install Plex outside of app centre, I'll try that and see if I can install to a different location (vol 2).
To be honest I don't mind starting from a fresh install, so over the top updates messing things up should hopefully not affect me as I won't to avoid migrating.
All my movies are on a raid 6 array, its just the Plex app itself I'm looking to put on an SSD. If the SSD fails its not a big deal for me, I'll just replace it, re-install the app and download all the meta data again. I might lose my on deck stuff, but again not really fussed.
I'll do a manual install of the app and see how it goes!

Re: Move library to SSD drive.
OK so I'm not sure if I'm doing something stupid.
I uninstalled plex server.
I downloaded the QPKG from plex website.
I installed manually, and still no option to choose and install location.
What am I doing wrong?
The version downloaded from the plex site is 1.14.1.5488-cc260c476 - last updated 18th Dec.
I am running QTS 4.3.5

Re: Move library to SSD drive.
You can’t choose install location during install. You would be able to do a “migrate to’ post install via app center. If not then that feature may only be on the new package versions, but was pretty sure on some of the later Plex Pass versions.insomniac123 wrote:OK so I'm not sure if I'm doing something stupid.

A beta version of Plex 1.15.0.550 (or 545) gives the migrate option.
It took me 4 hours to migrate from HD to SSD and total size about 40gb!
But now all working as i had hoped - with fingers x

Unfortunately I am not a plex pass subscriber, so I'm still waiting for the option to move the library to SSD in a general release update.
