With the 472XT, you get a much more powerful CPU, 2x NVME, 10Gbe, USB 3.1, HDMI 2.0, thunderbolt 3, etc... Much better box for a few $ more.
that is like 2.5x as much as the 453be...not sure that is a "few $ more" really

exactly and you do get 10Gbit already with the 951x and more room to grow (9 drive bays vs 4).

Liking the 951x so far. migration form the ts-453a went well. the only hitch were the dockers containers they experience network connectivity issues. fix was to completely remove them and container station and install it again problem solved.

Glad things are working good so far. Make sure and get your Plex Pass to enable HW transcoding capability.

2.5x the price after you add the M.2 card you need? You must have some crazy aggressive pricing on your 453be.

The 472XT and the 951X have the same IGPU, so if you want hardware transcoding the 951X is the better deal for sure

Thanks Trexx, i have been a Plex pas user for a while now :)

Also the migration “feature” is definitely a time saver for sure. Of course the key is to put the old drives is in the same order as they were in the old has

With 951x you can't have full 4K HDR quality. 472XT looks like cheapest Qnap for full quality 4K. Still too expensive for me.

sure you can ..you just dont use the qnap as a player

I doubt the 472XT currently supports HDR output (lack of player support)

So if I'm not using Qnap directly attached to TV via HDMI and Qnap is only Plex server with Plex pass. Then I have Plex player (Apple TV currently) attached to TV and to Qnap via ethernet.

What is the difference for 4K UHD between: TS-251A (current), TVS-951x, TS-873?
Summary of my knowledge: All of them can transcode. Only 951x can do 4x real time. I can get best possible 4K quality and real time transcoding only with 951x. I can have best possible 4K quality with 251A and 873 if I do transcoding at night to a separate file and use more disk space.
Is it correct?

If you do the transcode in advance (no realtime) about any intel/amd NAS will sufice

Do your own tests to check if 1-night transcode is enough. (ie 4k -->720p)

Anyway, for directplay, even in 4k, an ARM NAS is good enough.

So what is advantage of TVS-951x over TS-873? With which should I upgrade from my TS-251A?

Mainly if you:
need 4 ssd'+ 5 hdds --> 951
or just prefer 8 hdds --> 873

why would you want to transcode 4k to 720p ? a larger NAS also has more space (given same size disks used)
