TS-419p II - +100MB/s down but ~40MB/s up ?

I have a TS-419p II (freshly reset to factory) with 4 1GB drives in a Raid 5, latest versions of the s/w (Jan 2019).
LAN1 is connected to my Rogers router at 1000gb/s, full duplex, MTU 1500.
Macbook pro with 1TB WD Blue SSD and 8GB Ram. Nic is set to same as above.

Using NFS or AFP, I get over 100MB/s down using a 3GB GoPro video, but only 40MB/s up.

Tried using wireshark to see what might be slowing things down.

Something on the NAS? Something on the LAN? Something on the MAC?

MTU from 1500 to 9000 on either end increases things by about 5-10MB/s.

Why is download so much faster than upload?

writes to arrays are almost always slower than reads. Parity data has to be calculated and written along with the file itself. On read you're just pulling the data from all devices simultaneously.

I have my 419p+ set for RAID 10 to not deal with parity calcs. that way, writes are a little faster(55-60Megabyte\s ish) , but they cannot saturate 1GbE

If I were to put a single SSD in the array and upload to it, should I get close to the same upload and download? As a test that is..

adding single hdd does abolutely nothing

even replacing all spinning disks with ssds will do nothing ..it's not the disks that bottleneck the system..it's the decade old cell phone class cpu in your system

I think I'll run some tests to a windows 10 machine I have and see if that's faster. If so, I'll move my data and drives to it and sell the TS-419p II. One less machine in the house!

energy consumption of that machine will probably be much higher than the 419pII

Did some tests regarding speed. You can see that the TS-419p II (labelled as NAS) is struggling. The single hard disk (2.5" 500GB circa 2012) is in the middle. It's limited by its own disk speed. The SSD transfer on the right is clearly maxing out the Gigabit network.

So the NAS with 4 1TB drives should be able to fill the Gigabit network throughput but the Marvell processor and other hardware in the TS-419p II can't keep up.

not much news there...that's what I said ..the nas is just too slow

one way to get a bit more speed would be to go for raid10 .. it is lighter on cpu as parity calc is omitted (vs raid5 or even raid6)
