Considering purchase TS-873

Hi, everyone. Thinking of buying a TS-873 and had some questions which I hope to get feedback on.

I will buy either the 12tb or 14tb drives - a RAID10 with 4 drives leaving room for another RAID10 on the other 4 slots at a later date. Plan to get the 4gb RAM version (2x2gb) and then populate the other 2 slots with 16gb sticks.

Questions:

1) Will the RAM config work as planned...total 38gb RAM?

2) My preference is HGST drives - any gotchas with non-standard mounting holes or recommendations with other branded drives?

3) Plex duties - 1080p on both H264 and H265. Will it service up to 3 client? What about 4K down the line?

Go RAID6 .. movie playback is mostly sequential work, no need for RAID10 .. and a RAID6 you can easily expand by adding more drives

I am running Plex server on my 951X with 10GB RAM .. and it works fine (4k HDR is too much for software transcoding for that box), so unless you are planning to run VM's or containers , no need for that much RAM

I value quicker rebuild times if a disk should go bad over the pros of RAID6.

I've reading some threads over the RAM questions and I get the feeling I may have to pull the 2gb simms when I add the 16gb ones.

rebuild times would be quicker but the volumes are available during the whole rebuild ... shouldn't be an issue

so what was all that ram for again ?

I don’t think Raid-5 vs Raid-6 would make a big difference in the rebuild time as the NAS would be calculating the missing data blocks from the remaining drives if only 1 drive is failed in either case.

The QNAP will host some VMs and maybe some containers. The latter isn't a certainty, but worth consideration.

BTW, can anyone point me to the specs for the 16gb simms that would work for this?
